I stared at the small pile of ash on the floor, the evidence of what I'd done. What I was capable of. My fingers trembled as I pressed them to my lips, the acrid smell of smoke still clinging to my skin.
"What am I?" I whispered to the empty room.
The flames had sprung from nowhere—from me—consuming Rowan's shirt in seconds. The memory of that sudden, fierce power coursing through my veins sent a chill down my spine.
No time to dwell on it now. I needed to leave this place before Rowan returned.
I moved quickly, wiping away any trace of my tears with the back of my hand. My legs felt unsteady beneath me as I slipped out of his dorm room and into the hallway. The corridor seemed impossibly long, stretching before me like a gauntlet I had to run.
As I walked, I caught whispers. Snippets of conversation that made my stomach clench.
"That's her—the one who cheated on Alpha Rhys."
"Can you believe she'd risk everything for Rowan?"
"What a slut."
