A Mother's Burden, A Daughter's Truth

"You still haven't told her the truth, have you?" Orion demanded, his voice a menacing growl as his fingers tightened around my mother's neck.

"Stop it!" I screamed, thrashing against Gideon's restraining arms. "Let her go!"

My mother's eyes found mine, filled with something I'd never seen before—pure, unfiltered fear. Not for herself, I realized with stunning clarity, but for me.

"What truth?" I demanded, my voice breaking. "Mom, what is he talking about?"

Orion's grip loosened slightly, but he kept my mother pinned against the wall. "Your daughter deserves to know what you've been hiding from her all these years, Dr. Croft. Or should I call you Lena Vance?"

The room fell silent.

Gideon's arms relaxed around me, and I broke free, rushing toward them. Before I could reach my mother, I saw her nod slightly, defeated. Orion released her and stepped back, his face impassive but his eyes blazing with contained fury.

"Mom?" I whispered, reaching for her hand.
