"Were you ever actually sick?" I demanded, my voice trembling with rage.
My mother at least had the decency to look ashamed as she stood from the chaise lounge. "Elara, sweetheart—"
"Don't 'sweetheart' me," I snapped, crossing my arms over my chest. "I rushed here thinking you were seriously ill! I was worried sick about you!"
Mom took a tentative step toward me. "I know, and I'm sorry for the deception. But you wouldn't have come otherwise."
"So you made Orion lie to me too?" My voice cracked. "How did you even convince him to be part of this?"
She sighed, bending down to retrieve her fallen phone. "Orion and I have been in contact for the past year. He understands a mother's desperation."
That revelation hit me like a physical blow. Orion, who I trusted completely, had been speaking with my mother behind my back. The betrayal stung deeper than I wanted to admit.
"I can't believe this," I said, shaking my head. "I'm leaving."
