A Deceptive Summons, A Shadowed Past

I sat beside Orion, my heart filled with a confusing mix of emotions as his words hung between us. His apology for my past suffering touched me in ways I hadn't expected, making my cheeks warm and my pulse quicken.

"You don't need to apologize for things that weren't your fault," I said, meeting his intense gaze.

Orion leaned slightly closer, his scent—pine and mountain air—enveloping me. "I may not have caused your pain, but I am sorry you experienced it. No one should suffer as you have, Elara."

The way he said my name made my breath catch. Four years in his pack, working closely with him, and still he could affect me this way with just a few words. I fidgeted with the hem of my dress, suddenly aware of how close we were sitting.

"Can I ask you something?" I ventured, the question I'd been holding back finally finding its way to my lips.

"Anything," he replied, his expression open.
