Chapter Nine: Crossroads

In His Garden Again —Ariana was allowed into the garden once more. Her wrists were free. Her waist, untouched by rope. Lucian sat beside her, closer than ever. His voice softer. His fingers brushed hers. She didn't pull away immediately."You hated me once," Ariana said, her voice strained. "Now you… look at me like you'd burn the world for me."Lucian's gaze was steady, but filled with something unspoken. "I would. And I hate that it's true." Their eyes met. She didn't love him. But she didn't fully hate him anymore either. And that was the scariest part of all.

Rowan Rises —In the castle barracks, Rowan sharpened his blade, each stroke deliberate and sharp as his thoughts. His armor glinted in the faint light, a beacon of resolve. Soldiers knelt before him, loyal to the end."The Shadow Kingdom is weakened," the general spoke, voice low but firm. "Lucian's magic is fading. He's distracted, unstable." Rowan's eyes were ice. "He's falling in love. That's what's weakening him." He stood tall, the wind howling around him. "And that's why we strike now. Before he turns her confusion into chains she can't escape."

Lucian's Fall Begins —Lucian watched Ariana sleep in her cell, door unlocked. Her head was tilted slightly, a book in her hand. He didn't touch her. Just watched. And for the first time, he wished she could love him freely." What am I becoming…?" he whispered to himself. Magic crackled in his hands, then fizzled out. He clutched his chest, the weight of his emotions growing heavier by the minute. He was weakening. Not from war. But from wanting to be good enough for her.

An Unlikely Friendship —In the cursed garden, the air smelled of moss and fading magic. Ariana and Lucian sat beneath the twisted tree, where roses bloomed black."You don't flinch from me anymore," Lucian said, leaning back against the trunk.Ariana gazed at the sky, her eyes distant. "Because I've stopped fearing the monster. You're just… a boy who never learned how to love right." Lucian glanced at her, his eyes heavy with an understanding he hadn't expected. "And you… are the girl who taught me how." She looked at him then, a sad smile on her lips."You're not my enemy anymore, Lucian," Ariana said, her voice soft. "But that doesn't mean you're the one I love." Lucian nodded, his eyes dark with the weight of her words. "I know. But let me be your… friend. If nothing else." She nodded, and a silence fell between them—one not filled with tension, but with something real. Something that didn't need to be spoken to be understood.
