Chapter 29

— Hazel—

The warm rays of the sun shined into my eyes as I moved around the bed, disturbed. But that isn't what woke me up.

It was a loud and full-blown argument with sharp and ugly words. Who would even be speaking in such a manner? The voices echoed outside my room.

I came off the bed quickly and put on one of the nighties in the walk-in closet. The voices were sharper tho…

Sounded like a man and a woman arguing. I don't really know. I can't tell from here. I walked towards the door and slowly opened so it wouldn't squeak.

My legs and back hurt more now but tell me why I won't just mind my business.

Voices. Louder now. I crept out.

My feet were bare and the room temperature in this house is always so cold. I've been meaning to complain but there's no need.

As I got closer to the stairs, the words became clearer—and my stomach dropped.
