Chapter 44

-Ace-

I hated the smell of police stations.

That blend of sweat, old paperwork, and something sour in the air—I don't know what it was, but it stuck to my skin like guilt. I'd been sitting in that interrogation room for hours, my hands clenched, jaw tight.

They threw questions at me like I was already guilty. Fraud, bribery, manipulation of funds—bullshit built on nothing.

Callen finally showed up after what felt like forever.

The moment he walked in, all sharp in that navy suit and calm face, I could breathe just a little.

"The fuck took you so long?" I muttered under my breath.

He shot me a look. "Try thanking me first.

They were pushing to detain you overnight."

I rolled my eyes. "Of course they were."

Callen laid out the facts clearly, calmly. "There's no real evidence. Just accusations flying from a press leak and a few anonymous tips. No documents, no witnesses. They've got nothing substantial."
