—Hazel—
I kept glancing at my screen, waiting for Mabel to call.
Every second she didn't text felt like a second closer to something going wrong.
I must've checked the time a hundred times in thirty minutes. I kept imagining her walking into some dark alley, some shadowy figure stepping out, and me never hearing from her again.
By the time the phone finally rang, I jumped so hard I almost dropped it.
"Mabel?"
"Hazel." Her voice was low but steady.
"Oh my God, are you okay?"
"I'm fine," she said quickly. "I'm outside now, sitting in my car. I parked a few streets away from the meeting point just in case anyone was watching. Listen, you need to hear what she told me."
I sat up in bed, heart pounding. "Go on."
