Lila woke with a start, her heart pounding in the dark silence of the room. The remnants of a dream clung to her mind like shadows- vivid, unsettling. In the dream, Jeremiah was sitting in the back of the truck, the engine humming softly as they drove through the canyon. Suddenly, the truck shimmered, flickered, and vanished into thin air, leaving nothing but empty road behind.
She lay still for a moment, the echo of that vanishing truck ringing in her ears. The feeling of loss was sharp, familiar. Slowly, she sat up, rubbing her eyes, trying to shake the unease that settled deep in her chest.
When Jake and Samuel came into the room, she was already awake, her face pale and thoughtful.
"I had a dream about Jeremiah," she said quietly. "He was in the truck, and then… the truck disappeared. Just like that."
Samuel's eyes lit up with recognition, but Jake frowned, confusion knitting his brow.
Lila took a deep breath. "I've been thinking. What if Jeremiah disappeared because he was inside the truck? What if the truck itself is part of the settlement's loop?"
Samuel nodded slowly. "That makes sense. We've seen how the settlement resets- how time loops back on itself. If the truck is part of that cycle, it would reset too, sometimes as a cart, sometimes as a truck, depending on the time."
Jake shook his head, struggling to grasp the implications. "So the truck isn't just a vehicle. It's… a piece of the loop. It's tied to the settlement's time, and when the settlement resets, the truck resets with it."
"Exactly," Samuel said. "That means Jeremiah's disappearance isn't random. He's caught in the same cycle. When the settlement resets, he resets too, along with the truck."
Lila's voice was steady but tinged with fear. "It means we're chasing shadows. Every time we think we've found a way out, the loop pulls us back in."
Jake sat back, the weight of their situation pressing down on him. "So, how do we break free? How do we stop the loop from dragging us back?"
Samuel looked at them both, determination in his eyes. "We have to understand the loop's mechanics better. We need to find the source -whatever controls the resets- and disrupt it."
Lila nodded. "And we have to be careful. Every move we make is watched. Every change we try to make could trigger another reset."
They sat together in the quiet room, the flickering candle casting long shadows on the walls. Outside, the canyon was still, but inside, their resolve burned brighter than ever.
