Finally, in the middle of the third night, Ava looked down at her daughter's impossibly alert eyes and whispered:

Julian looked over from the kitchen, stunned.

"Because she survived fire," Ava whispered. "Because she is the fire."

He walked over and kissed both Ember's eyelids.

PART 2: MARINA COMES BACK (POV: Julian)

Marina showed up with flowers and two bottles of coconut water.

> "I wasn't sure if I was still welcome…"

Julian stepped aside without a word and let her in.

She burst into tears the moment she saw the baby.

> "I didn't know what to say," Marina sobbed, touching Ember's foot. "I was so afraid you'd ruined your lives. But now… now I think you saved each other."

Ava pulled her into a hug. And they cried — for the lost time, the broken trust, the rebirth of something better than before.

Ten days later, Ava pushed Ember's stroller through the same neighborhood where she and Julian first learned to tiptoe around each other.

Everything looked smaller now. Familiar. Softer.

She stopped outside the old record store where they first kissed behind the side wall.

Julian came up behind her, Ember strapped against his chest, sleeping.
