Chapter 10 – The Desert That Remembers

Recap:

Ansh, Ishu, and Vaishnavi retrieved the second Anchor from a dreaming lighthouse, where the Watchers began taking familiar forms. Ansh remembered fragments of his past life as Sovaan and heard the name Miralai—a key to his true identity.

The sun burned above them as they walked through the salt desert.

White sand stretched in every direction. It was quiet. Too quiet. No birds. No wind. Just the sound of their boots crunching on salt.

Vaishnavi held a map that looked half-burned. "The third Anchor should be near an old monastery buried under the desert. It was built to keep something asleep."

"Like the Watchers?" Ishu asked.

She nodded. "Or something worse."

Ansh walked ahead, the silver sphere from the lighthouse glowing in his backpack. It pulsed slowly, like a warning.

After hours of walking, they saw something rising from the salt—a crooked tower, cracked and leaning.

"That's it," Vaishnavi said. "The monastery."

They stepped inside.

The air was cold, even though it was hot outside. Walls were covered in strange carvings—figures without faces, and doors made of light.

"Feels like a tomb," Ishu whispered.

Then they heard it.

Tick.

Tick.

Tick.

A clock, somewhere deep underground.

They followed the sound down spiral stairs until they reached a large hall. In the center was a sundial, but its shadow moved the wrong way—backward.

"This place doesn't follow normal time," Ansh said.

As they stepped forward, the sundial flashed.

And time broke.

Suddenly, Ansh was back in his old school uniform. He looked around—he was in his old classroom. But it was... off.

The students all had the same face.

His.

Ishu was there, but younger. Vaishnavi too. They looked at him, confused.

"Ansh? You okay?" young Vaishnavi asked.

Ansh realized he was in a memory. But it wasn't just playing—it was changing.

One of the students stood. Its skin melted away, turning into a Watcher.

"Found you," it hissed.

In the real world, Vaishnavi and Ishu saw Ansh collapse.

"He's stuck in a loop!" Vaishnavi shouted.

The sundial turned faster.

"He's being erased!" she added.

Ishu grabbed Ansh's shoulders. "Wake up! We're here!"

But Ansh didn't move.

Inside the dream, Ansh ran.

The classroom twisted into a hallway. Then a playground. Then a burning sky.

The Watcher chased him, whispering lies:

"You never existed. You are just a shadow."

But then, he heard a second voice. Softer. Kinder.

"Remember Miralai."

A bright light burst from his chest.

And the Watcher screamed.

Ansh sat up with a gasp.

The sundial cracked.

From its center rose a stone ring, glowing blue. Inside it floated a pendant shaped like a tear.

"The third Anchor," Vaishnavi said.

Ansh grabbed it. This time, it felt different. Calmer. Warmer.

Ishu helped him stand. "What happened in there?"

"They tried to make me forget. But I held on. I think Miralai is more than a name. It's a memory I need to find."

Vaishnavi looked at the pendant. "Then we're close. One more Anchor to go."

But the sun outside was gone.

Darkness was rising.
