Kevin walked home, clutching a stack of inferior printouts in his hand, feeling an overwhelming surge of emotion. With tears streaming down his face, he realized that from today onward, he was an employee of a cross-world supercivilization, an Earthling who could directly converse with deities. Behind him loomed the Temporal Administration Bureau, a monstrosity whose very name sent shivers down one's spine. In his possession was the Contract of the Gods, and his employee number could even be found in the attendance register of heaven. If thrown into a world where theocracy reigned supreme, he could proudly announce that he was a candidate for the Saint's Son, and upon passing the probationary test, he would transform from a contractual Saint's Son to a lifelong Saint's Son... Could you blame him for feeling emotional and tearful? Why were matters concerning deities so different from what he had seen on TV before! But regardless, Kevin had registered and started working at an incredibly significant place. No matter how strange Raven 12345 and the Temporal Administration Bureau behind her, as well as the entire "Empire of Hsingling," were, they were more incredible than anything Kevin had ever seen before. Kevin glanced down at the contract in his hand and recalled Raven 12345's final words to him, "From today onward, you are an apprentice inspector. Taking care of the tenants in your home is your only current task. Our Hsingling deity system is not accustomed to managing its direct subordinate institutions in the form of a church, as is done by ordinary religions. Therefore, our unit rates employees based on attendance and merit. You'd better not mess around with those religious legends and church brochures from Earth. I've encountered such naughty kids in other worlds... Don't bother with it, just do your job well." With a silent sigh, Kevin once again confirmed that he had boarded a pirate ship. He folded the torn pieces of paper and stuffed them into his pocket, intending to lock them in a safer place when he got home to prevent "Gun" from tearing them up and eating them. To be honest, Kevin didn't fully believe in his experiences of today, and he had many doubts about Raven 12345, especially when holding these few pieces of paper (come on, have you ever seen a celestial contract printed out by a printer? And with typos too!). But as mentioned before, Kevin was a person who could recognize the situation very well. Regardless of Raven 12345's background, the difference between her and Kevin, purely in terms of abilities, was like that between a deity and a mortal. Even if she made typos, liked picking her nails, ate pancake rolls with onions, and spoke incoherently... she was still not someone ordinary people could handle. So, if Kevin wanted to ensure a peaceful life, he had to cooperate well.
Walking on the desolate highway under the blazing sun, Kevin pulled out his phone to check the time. Looking at the empty road stretching out in front of and behind him, not even a ghostly shadow in sight, he couldn't help but sigh in his heart: Working for the gods is too unreliable. How come they don't even provide transportation? With his status, he would at least be a prophet in a theocratic society. How come after receiving the divine calling (aka signing the contract) from the gods, he had to cram onto a bus to get home? And he had been waiting for half a day without even boarding the bus!
He couldn't help but think of the myths and legends on Earth, trying to recall how those saints and prophets in history returned home after gaining enlightenment on the great path, whether they squeezed into a carriage with others or ran back on foot. After pondering for a while, he came to no conclusion: Which bible would write about this?
Just as his mind was wandering, a ringtone suddenly reached his ears. Kevin grabbed his phone and saw that it was an unknown number. Fortunately, it wasn't a creepy number like 00000012345.
"Hello, who is it please?" Kevin answered the phone very politely. From today onward, he was a person of status and had to always be mindful of his words and actions. Although the goddess over his head was not very reliable, he decided to make himself appear reliable.
To his surprise, Lily's voice came through the receiver, tinged with a hint of anxiety, "Landlord! It's me! It's Lily!"
"Er... Lily?" Kevin almost blurted out the words "idiot werewolf," but fortunately he controlled himself in time, "What's wrong?"
"Oh, I just suddenly remembered that your phone number was on that rental advertisement. I spent the whole day yesterday looking for the address, and if I had just called you directly at that time, it would have been so much better..."
Kevin's forehead sweated, "...You called me in such a hurry just to say that?"
Lily's voice became excited, "No! It's Weili's situation that's not right. She suddenly flew out just now, flew out of the window in broad daylight! I tried chasing her but couldn't catch up!"
Kevin really wanted to shout: That's the point, okay! Why are you calling and rambling all over the place, you idiot?
"Weili flew out? Did she fly like a bat?" Kevin wondered why he was still focusing on such strange things at this moment, as he was already a bit dazed: Just a few minutes ago, he had patted his chest and promised the woman who claimed to be a god that he would let the strange creatures in his house live peacefully, but only a few minutes after leaving her place, something went wrong at home!
It was a swarm of bats," Lily corrected seriously and then said hastily, "When she flew away, she also said that this place wasn't safe... I didn't know who to call, so I called you."
"Stay home and don't run out casually, I'll be back soon," Kevin said hastily, while out of the corner of his eye, he saw a dilapidated bus approaching from not far away. He hailed the bus while instructing Lily, and then hung up the phone in a hurry, squeezing onto the bus and starting to ponder: What is Weili up to?
Although Kevin knew very little about the supernatural creatures, and his only knowledge came from those unreliable TV legends (which had already proven to be unreliable), he was at least sure that vampires would be uncomfortable in the sunlight, and Weili had personally admitted this point. So he was confident that the vampire turning into a swarm of bats and flying away in broad daylight was definitely not just waking up and wanting to go out for a stroll. There must be some emergency! And what did Weili mean by saying "this place isn't safe"? Did she mean his own house?
Kevin knew that besides the vampire, the creature with the highest combat power in his house was the idiot-like werewolf. And Weili basically looked down on Lily, so the scenario of "the vampire being driven away by the werewolf's aura" could be completely ruled out. So what was unsafe about the house?
Kevin suddenly felt that the task given to him by that Raven 12345... probably had a trap.
When Kevin returned to the old downtown area of the southern suburbs half an hour later, he saw several people in work clothes walking towards him as soon as he got off the bus. His heart tightened instantly: Had they been exposed so soon? Who were these people? Researchers from the Chinese Academy of Sciences? Setting traps to capture vampires? Installing surveillance equipment near his house? Special warfare soldiers disguised as network employees?
But when they approached Kevin, he relaxed: They were just a maintenance team...
As the maintenance crew walked by, Kevin vaguely heard their conversation:
"...I've never encountered this situation in all these years. How did that brick fly up there?"
"Who knows, it can't be thrown by a person, can it? The TV tower is so high, who has such strength? But it's really weird, that brick almost broke three steel bars..."
"Tell me about it. Today we received a report that the TV signal was down in the southern suburbs, and we wondered what was going on. Turns out a half-brick was smashed into the signal tower. How are we going to write our work report now?"
As the maintenance crew gradually faded away, Kevin listened in a daze and understood two things:
First, he knew what had happened to the TV signal at home.
Secondly, he knew where one of the bricks thrown out during Lily and Weili's fight last night had flown...
What good does knowing this do?!
Kevin ran to his doorstep and first cautiously made sure that there were no special warfare soldiers or suspicious figures in black suits lurking around before reaching for his keys to open the door. However, before he could insert the key into the lock, the door opened by itself.
Weili was standing there perfectly fine, with a smile on her face: "The landlord is back?"
Kevin almost choked on his breath, and after finally catching it, he stared blankly at the vampire girl who was supposedly "flown away". His expression was uncertain: "Weili, didn't you... fly away?"
Weili chuckled dryly: "Uh, there was indeed some situation that made me leave, but I'm back now."
Kevin: "..."
Is this how the rest of my days are going to be?!
