Author's note:
(PS. most of this chapter is just me going more in depth about the classifications and grading systems I feel I left to vague. If you're not interested then just skip it.)
Hello there! This is the author speaking or writing? Which ever terminology fits! I just wanted to talk about this volume, when I suddenly had this great idea:
'Hey! Why not dedicate chapter one oh one to talk about this?'
And so here we are.
1st of all: I wanted to use this academy arc to flush out some of the many concepts, grading systems and just general worldbuilding to prepare for the future, but i struggled to write Nox's classes without making it to boring or dropping spoilers everywhere.
2nd of all: I am not a professional writer, so my story telling and story structure is bound to be all over the place. I also feel like I kind of failed at explaining some things properly or in a precise manner, so I will try to list the various grading systems while giving a comparison to the cultivation system established in volume 1, and in case you don't remember I will list that one as well. I will also give an explanation of some things I remember off the top of my head that might have been a bit confusing.
Magic and cultivation incompatibility: In chapter 42 Kenji mentioned that qi is incompatible with magic. What he actually meant to say was that qi is incompatible with spellcasting and not magic as a whole as many cultivators pick up the basics of enchanting to create magic rituals or barriers to aid in their cultivation.
Spellcaster Rankings:
- 1st tier: The most basic form of spells that practically anyone can do, and is not really suitable for combat. An example would be creating a small fire to light a candle or gathering the moisture in the atmosphere to fill a glass with water.
- 2nd tier: spells strong enough to actually deal damage. The equivalent of a 'Qi Refinement' cultivator.
- 3rd tier: Spells strong enough to deal lethal damage to a normal human. This is the peak of what normal people can reach without talent or whatever Nox is. The equivalent of a 'Golden Core' cultivator.
- 4th tier: Spells capable of large-scale destruction, like knocking down a building. Only exceptional mages reach this point. The equivalent of an early to mid 'Nascent Soul Realm' cultivator.
- 5th tier: Spells with enough power to knock several buildings. The equivalent of a mid to late 'Nascent Soul Realm' cultivator.
- 6th tier: The base requirement to be considered an 'Archmage'. Spells of this tier can level villages to the ground. The equivalent of a 'Human Immortal' cultivator.
Magic Beast Danger Rankings:
- Common: Creatures with the power of your normal, everyday animal, like a dog or a cow.
- Rare: Slightly more dangerous and possibly magical creatures like a red leopard with claws made of fire. The equivalent of a 'Qi Refinement' cultivator
- Unique: The weakest of baby dragons and phoenixes can sometimes fall into this category due being underdeveloped. Other more known fictional creatures that fall into this category could be the minotaur or ogres. The equivalent of a cultivator in the 'Nascent Soul Realm'.
- Legendary: Adult dragons and phoenixes fall into this category. All legendary beasts possess a high purity magic stone core which they use to enhance their bodies or attack. The equivalent of a 'Human or Earth Immortal' cultivator.
- Mythical: The highest danger ranking of beasts. An example of this could be the Nine-Headed shadow Hydra Nox summoned. It had the power of nine legendary beasts from each elements combined, which makes it to powerful for the legendary class. The equivalent of a 'Heaven Immortal' cultivator.
- Divine: The highest ranking of beast alongside the mythical. Its overall power can vary greatly between that of any of the other classifications, but has the advantage of having divine energy that can practically do anything. The equivalent of a 'Heaven Immortal' cultivator.
Artifact Ranking:
- Common: The equivalent of your run of the mill iron sword.
- Rare: A weakly enchanted weapon.
- Unique: A strongly enchanted weapon, like the spear of the Suzuki family that was sharp enough for a mortal mage to scratch the overpowered dark lord.
- Legendary: A weapon that can fire off attacks on par with a 'Human to Earth Immortal' cultivator. Any enchanter who can create such an artifact is considered an 'Archmage'.
- Mythical: A weapon that can fire off attacks on par with a 'Heavon Immortal' cultivator.
- Divine: An artifact of the highest class. There are no exact classifications other than it being far to powerful to be considered a mythical grade artifact. An example of this could be the autonomous flying 'Spear of Pride' that was about to skewer the dark lord at the end of volume 1.
