it began with the taste of salt.
Ren sat at a grand banquet table carved from mother-of-pearl, its surface slick with condensation. All around him, the ocean pulsed like a living heart — clear walls of water rose up beyond the dais, filled with drifting jellyfish and great dark shapes that watched with unblinking eyes.
Beside him, Lyra lounged in a coral-backed throne, though "lounged" was a lie. Her entire body was coiled tight. Every time one of the Pearl Queen's handmaidens leaned in to offer Ren a cup or brush a teasing hand over his shoulder, Lyra's fingers dug little crescents into the armrest.
Across the table, Aurelienne watched it all with that slow, secret smile. Her silver hair floated around her like a halo. Small fish wove through it, darting close to nibble at her scales.
When Ren met her gaze, it was like falling through deep water — cool, thick, endless.

The system's whisper barely felt like his own thought anymore. He swallowed hard.
Lyra's hand shot out, wrapping around his. Her nails bit into his knuckles. "Ignore her. Ignore all of this," she hissed under her breath. "She's trying to feed on your curiosity."
Ren's lips twitched. "Is it working if I only notice how angry it makes you?"
"Don't joke." Her grip tightened. Her eyes burned, a storm ready to tear down every pearl in the palace. "She wants to slip inside your thoughts first. Then your bed. Then your soul."
He leaned close, brushing a kiss to her temple. "You underestimate how stubborn I am."
The feast was a dream built to tempt.
They were served dishes of strange, luminous meat that melted like honey on the tongue. Cups of dark blue wine that fizzed with tiny bubbles.Music floated through the hall — not strings or flutes, but something wetter, rounder, like voices singing under a thousand fathoms.
Dancers twirled across the floor, half-naked, their bodies painted in swirls of phosphorescent light. As they spun, the paint left glowing trails in the water.
One dancer — sleek, with opal-pale skin and a mouth too wide to be human — slid right up to Ren. Her long fingers traced over his shoulders, down his chest. Tiny pearls clung to her fingertips, leaving cool spots that almost burned.
"Let me bless you for the queen," she breathed, her lips close to his ear.
Lyra was out of her chair before the thought even finished. Her hand slammed into the dancer's chest, sending her skidding across the slick floor in a swirl of flashing lights.
The music faltered. Every eye turned to them.
Lyra stood there, hair rising like dark petals, power crackling so hard tiny flowers bloomed and withered instantly on the table. "Touch him again and I'll seed your body with brambles that never stop growing."
A soft laugh rippled through the hall.
Aurelienne rose, liquid and elegant, her long arms spreading as if to gather the entire ocean. "So fierce, goddess of bloom. Your devotion scents the water sweeter than any rose. But you misunderstand."
She walked toward them, each step silent, her scaled feet stirring little spirals in the water. When she stood before Ren, she reached out and lightly traced his jaw with one cold fingertip. "I do not want to steal him from you. I want to see what your love has made him into. What depths it carved out in his chest. What storms it might awaken in mine."
Lyra's snarl was pure violence. "You'll see nothing but your own blood on these palace walls if you try."
But Ren…Ren shivered. Not from fear. The Queen's touch left a ghostly hunger in its wake, like he'd swallowed a mouthful of chilled brine and now wanted more.

His breath caught. Lyra's eyes whipped to him, and whatever she saw on his face made her grab his chin, forcing him to look only at her.
"Don't," she whispered. "Don't feed it. Don't play with this power like it's harmless."
He closed his eyes, pressing his forehead to hers. "I won't. Not tonight."
The feast ended.
They were escorted to their chambers by the same painted servants, who moved with shy, darting glances that promised far more than respect.
Inside, the guest chamber glowed with gentle blue light. The bed was an enormous woven nest of seaweed and soft sponge. Above, the ceiling was a dome of clear water — massive creatures swam by now and then, casting moving shadows over them.
Lyra didn't let go of his hand the entire walk. Once the door closed, she shoved him against it, kissing him hard, teeth scraping.
"I hate this place," she snarled. "It wants you. It sings to you like a lover."
"I'm not listening," he murmured, though his pulse betrayed him. Her body pressed tight to his, grounding him.
"Liar." Her mouth twisted, almost a sob. "I can smell the salt on you. I can taste it on your tongue."
They fell into the bed, tearing at each other — desperate, rough. Lyra's power curled around them, hot flower vines digging into the sponge walls, as if trying to claim the whole palace by force.
When it was over, they lay tangled, her head on his chest. Her breaths slowed, lashes lowering. Sleep tugged at her like soft hands.
Ren watched the ceiling. A vast silhouette drifted by, all silver and teeth. Somewhere far off, he thought he heard laughter — cool, feminine, full of promise.

His heart slammed. Lyra shifted in her sleep, sighing his name.
Ren swallowed, his throat dry. "What are you planning for us, Aurelienne…?"
Far across the palace, Aurelienne reclined in her throne. Her court had gone still, the lights dimmed. Only a few ghost-fish flitted through the coral arches.
She held a tiny swirl of water between her palms — inside it, images of Ren and Lyra tangled on their bed, of Lyra's tears, of Ren's face tilted up to the ceiling as if searching for her.
Aurelienne smiled, sharp teeth flashing. "Soon, little chaos vessel. The sea will wrap around your soul, and you will beg me to keep you from drowning."
