Chapter 27

Chapter 27

The soft crackling of logs in the fireplace resounded throughout the expansive dining room, where Chloe found herself dining in solitude.

How much longer could she bear this existence? The Duke was scheduled to arrive the following day, yet it offered no solace. His presence would only exacerbate her troubles rather than provide relief. Chloe pondered who presented the greater challenge between Damien and his mother. The members of the House of Thisse seemed to possess an uncanny talent for inflicting discomfort on others; the Duke reveled in driving people into corners, while his mother was in the habit of sweeping her earlier declarations aside with a wave of her hand.

Chloe stared blankly at the tough piece of steak and cold, limp vegetables on her plate. “I truly don’t know who’s worse,” she muttered to herself, spearing a pigeon pea with her fork.
