Perhaps realizing his actions from yesterday had hurt me, Kaelen suggested taking me to Moonlight Falls this morning to help me unwind.
"I'm sorry, Ella," he said, "My words were too harsh yesterday."
Kaelen rubbed his brow, a weary look etched on his face.
"Haven't you always wanted to go beneath the falls to absorb moon energy? As it happens, I'm free today."
I had mentioned it several times, but he always said clan affairs kept him too busy.
Now that he finally had the time, I found I no longer wanted to go.
When Kaelen heard my refusal, his brow furrowed.
"Are you still upset with me?"
Fearing he would notice something was amiss, I eventually agreed.
It was only when I was getting into the car that I discovered Seraphina was coming with us as well.
"Ella," she said, "I wanted to see Moonlight Falls too. You don't mind, do you?"
Seraphina seemed to have completely recovered, an innocent look on her face.
"I don't blame you for what happened yesterday," she said. "I'm sure you didn't mean it."
She said this, sticking her tongue out playfully, looking quite impish.
The look Kaelen gave her was so tender it seemed to overflow.
I averted my gaze and got into the car.
Seraphina sat in the passenger seat, chatting with Kaelen the entire journey.
The two of them shared an easy rapport, like a couple who had been together for years, while I was the one who felt like an outsider.
I gazed out the window, wondering how I could get Kaelen to sign that statement...
As night fell, I sat by the pool at the foot of the falls.Seraphina, dressed in light clothing, was playing in the shallows, and Kaelen had been pulled along to watch over her.
Whenever she occasionally stumbled, Kaelen would carry her out of the water.
Perhaps sensing it wasn't right, Kaelen came over and pulled me to join them in the water.
Sensing his guilt, I complied and stepped into the water.
But I never expected Seraphina to suddenly shove me. Just then, a massive wave crashed down, sweeping me directly into the deep water!
And Seraphina, as if on cue, also stumbled and began to struggle in the water.
Kaelen practically lunged towards Seraphina, heedless of the crashing waves, and scooped her into his arms.
Meanwhile, I was being dragged further and further away by the undercurrent.
The pitch-black night, the icy water—my fear peaked.
"Kaelen... save me..."
I choked on water, my voice swallowed by the roar of the waves.
Then, I watched helplessly as Kaelen carried Seraphina ashore, without a single backward glance.
He anxiously checked her over, murmuring words of comfort.
The water I'd inhaled burned in my chest, a searing pain, yet it was nothing compared to the agony of my heart being torn apart.
Kaelen, is this what you meant when you said you treasured me?
I watched the shore recede further and further into the distance, my body slowly sinking…
