Five Years Ago...

SMITH LAB,

Middle of Nowhere...

My parents were the only ones I've known since I began to comprehend what life really is. They were scientists who secretly work for top government officials; the nature of their work has never been made known to me, hence, the word secret. Our lab is the only place I know and it is located in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by a dense forest.

I was always confined to my room far away from their working area

"Those chemicals are toxic, they can kill" Mum always made sure those words were properly digested.

The morning everything went south was just like every other morning. I was sitting crossed leg in my room reading a copy of Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, one of my favorite authors.

Mum barged into my room and began throwing clothes into a bag,

"Get dressed, we must leave now"

"Mum what's going on?" My adrenaline was already at a hundred

"Jada, there is no time for questions, we'll explain later" she never looked at me once.

There was silence for about a minute then we heard a door being force open, and my Dad's voice yelling at someone.

My Dad's shout seemed to break her out of her trance.

She looked at me and stroked my cheek affectionately

"Jada, my love, we're sorry for getting you involved in all of this. We love you so much remember that" she gave me a very big hug then she slipped something into the pocket of my jean jacket.

"As soon as I leave, lock the door. If anything happens, escape through the window and never stop running till you get to the road"

"Mum, please don't leave me"

I saw a lone tear slide down her cheek

She tore a piece of paper and began to scribble something on it.

"Follow this directions, it will get you to the road, then call the number below"

"Mum..."

"Give him that vial in your pocket; he'll know what to do with it. Be very careful with it, it is highly dangerous. Don't let it touch your skin"

She gave me one last kiss on my forehead and then she was gone.

I locked the door as I was told.

I heard raised voices; I heard glasses shattering, I had to place my hands over my ears to block out the noise.

Everywhere suddenly became quiet and I saw smoke filtering into my room from under the door. I knew instantly that the house was on fire, I had to go. The smoke was already so dense.

I jumped out the window ad began running towards the forest. I heard voices so I had to hide behind a tree; I saw several black cars driving out.

When they were all gone, the house was already burnt to the ground. I crouched down and cried until it became dark then I knew I had to go.

I ran through the forest, following the direction was easy, I was close to the road when I got tripped by a large tree root. I landed so hard on my chest that air instantly got knocked out of my lungs.

I heard the loud crush of a bottle breaking underneath me, it took a while for my brain to process, Mum's words came to me loud and clear

"...don't let it come in contact with your skin"

It was already too late, I could see the blue liquid stain on my jacket and I could feel the burning sensation on my bare skin.

I knew I was changing, even as I lay on there on the floor screaming for my dear life as I felt my insides being ripped apart.

I knew if I ever survived this, I won't be the same again.

And that is exactly what happened.
