Chapter 4789: The Gathering Place
Zuo Lanshan, the human-snake, swam swiftly at the very front.
His movements were incredibly agile. Although his snake tail wasn't retracted and his body appeared immense, his serpentine form was exceptionally flexible, moving silently.
Mo Lian and Feng Chen followed closely behind him. They walked for about ten more minutes in the pitch-black darkness where they couldn't see their hands in front of their faces.
Suddenly, a faint, thin line of light appeared, like a faint glimmer seeping through a small crack in the stone wall.
Feng Chen and Mo Lian exchanged glances and quickly hastened their steps forward.
The human-snake had already darted ahead, swimming rapidly for several minutes with the speed of an arrow released from a bow.
He abruptly stopped, and Mo Lian and Feng Chen, following close behind, didn't expect him to halt so suddenly. They nearly stepped on his snake tail.
Feng Chen gave him an annoyed pat and whispered, "What are you doing?"
The human-snake quickly beckoned to them. "Come here, quick!"
Feng Chen inexplicably found this smelly snake somewhat ridiculous.
When this smelly snake went berserk, its combat power was astonishing. He never imagined that after returning to normal, it would be so foolish. The contrast was too great, and Feng Chen sometimes found it hard to react.
The two followed, drifting to a stop behind the human-snake.
From their angle, they could just see a strange sight.
Ahead was a massive sinkhole. Dozens of men and women in bizarre attire were devoutly bowing to the sinkhole, kowtowing repeatedly, their heads hitting the ground with resounding thuds, indicating great force.
The three exchanged stunned glances.
Mo Lian lowered his voice. "Didn't you claim to have lived here for hundreds of years? Have you never seen these people before?"
The human-snake looked utterly bewildered. "No. I don't think I've ever been here before, nor have I seen such a large pit."
Feng Chen couldn't help but twitch his lips. "I suspect this human-snake didn't fall all the way to the bottom initially."
"What do you mean?" the human-snake asked, utterly confused.
"It means the place where you were imprisoned was probably above this spot," Feng Chen rolled his eyes and pointed upwards into the dark, murky sky.
They had fallen from the bottomless pit, so it was highly possible the human-snake hadn't fallen to the very bottom initially.
After this guy fell in, he had been suppressed by the mysterious natural force at the bottom of the pit.
Perhaps he was just a simple-minded fellow who, feeling unable to break free, just... went into hibernation and fell asleep?
Feng Chen felt he was probably several steps closer to the truth, and he silently looked up, exchanging glances with Crown Prince Lian beside him.
Mo Lian absolutely did not want to talk to this foolish snake beside him.
On the other side, among the people who were kneeling and performing the sacrificial ritual, a leading elder suddenly looked warily in their direction and coldly rebuked, "Who, who's there!"
Mo Lian and Feng Chen exchanged glances, both nodded, then emerged from the darkness and appeared before the group.
Everyone quickly stood up from the edge of the sinkhole, defensively blocking its entrance, their eyes filled with suspicion and uncertainty as they looked at them.
The leading elder, with a hunched back and leaning on a walking stick, walked out of the crowd.
He had only one eye, and it stared directly at Mo Lian and Feng Chen, assessing them. He spoke in an ancient, cold voice, like something from the underworld, "Who are you?"
His gaze fell upon the human-snake, and his pupils slightly contracted.
A small commotion arose within the crowd.
