Emma
"Hello, I'm looking for Auriana Williams." A woman with fairly short black hair and a fragile build walked in a straight line to the reception.
"Room 3C," the receptionist answered. The woman nodded as a thank you and walked towards the correct department where I was already waiting for her.
"Wait, before you go in there's something you need to know." The woman looked at me expectantly. I understood why, she wanted to get to her daughter as quickly as possible.
"What then? It's nothing serious I hope?" I shook my head and shrugged a shoulder, a sign that we didn't exactly know how to divide it up.
"Auriana has lost her memory." We walked to Auriana's room.
"Who is that?" Auriana asked when the woman came in. She had sat down next to the bed and had taken Auriana's hand.
"Auriana this is your mother Theresa Williams," Skylar answered. Theresa turned her gaze to us and looked at us expectantly.
"Okay, can I know what exactly happened?" Theresa asked, "one minute I'm just quietly working, then the phone rings and I'm told that my daughter is in the hospital." We looked at each other and were busy discussing who should tell.
"Jake crossed the street but didn't see a car coming. Auriana and Nikki pushed him away, Nikki got hit and Auriana hit her head and lost her memory," I said, tired of the discussion. Emilia entered the room before Theresa could respond.
"Hello, are you Auriana's mother?"
"Yes," Theresa stuck out her hand, "Theresa Williams."
"Emilia Farmer," Emilia said, shaking Theresa's hand, "we want to keep Auriana here overnight just in case and if that goes well, she can go home tomorrow." Theresa felt like a huge weight was lifted from her shoulders.
"Should I bring you some pajamas or something?" She and Emilia walked out of the room.
"That would be nice," Emilia said.
Auriana
That night I was sleeping anything but peacefully.
"JAKE WATCH OUT!" Jimmy shouted. Jake was startled out of his thoughts and looked ahead. A car was coming straight towards him. He stood there, frozen with fear, not knowing what to do. We all stood on the sidewalk, no one really knowing what to do. Nikki and I took matters into our own hands and ran towards Jake. It all seemed to happen in slow motion, Nikki gave me an extra push so that Jake and I were both out of the way of the car, Nikki could not get out of the way in time. Jake felt someone push him to the side and fall to the ground with him. He heard the screeching of brakes and a scream. Skylar turned away from the scene, too scared to look. The other five stood frozen with fear on the other side of the road. The man got out of his car and took his cell phone out of his pocket. Jake scrambled to his feet. The first thing he noticed was red hair lying against the curb. He felt a slight pain in his shoulder and elbow. He touched it briefly with his good hand and ignored the pain.
"Auriana? Auriana?" Jake shook my shoulder gently but I didn't respond. Brooke and Renee ran towards Nikki, while Jimmy and Jeremy ran to Jake. He glanced away for a moment, but quickly turned his gaze back to me.
"Are you okay?" Jimmy asked. Jake lifted me up in his arms.
"No," he said and started running. I woke up covered in sweat. In full panic mode I pressed the alarm button and Emilia came running in almost immediately.
"What's wrong Auriana?"
"The girl from the accident, Nikki! The one who got hit by the car, where is she?"
"Auriana calm down," Emilia sat down on the bed next to me, "Nikki is here, in room 4D. She's still alive, but she's in a coma. She suffered a hard blow to the back of the head just like you did when she fell down. Her pelvis and legs have also suffered a lot of trauma and we are doing our best to make sure she wakes up as soon as possible." She made reassuring circles with her thumb over the back of my hand.
"Can I see her?" I asked worriedly.
"first we'll see how you both are doing tomorrow, and if all is well, you can go see her for a while, now go back to sleep." She gave me a smile before she left the room again.
Brooke
"Renee, just come! They're our friends!" I said on the phone. It had been a day since we had witnessed the accident. We had informed Scarlet from the hospital and had agreed to visit Auriana and Nikki again today, we had the whole day to be with our friends thanks to a study day. Yesterday we (except for Auriana and Nikki) had given a statement at the hospital when two officers came to get the story about how exactly the accident had occurred. However, for some reason Renee didn't want to come with me anymore and that really pushed my buttons. I had been trying to get Renee to change her mind for almost fifteen minutes now. If the roles had been reversed, Auriana and Nikki wouldn't have hesitated for a moment and would have preferred to be with her day and night.
"No, I hate hospitals! People die there." I felt the anger bubbling up inside me and I didn't get angry easily, but at that moment I could have drunk Renee's blood. It felt like Renee was somehow betraying Auriana and Nikki by not going.
"Don't be so stupid! You know they would do the same for you!" I tried not to sound angry, the last thing I wanted right now was to get into a fight with my best friend.
"What's so hard to understand about the word no? I'm not going and that's that! You can whine all you want, I'm not going to change my mind!" To make sure I didn't say anything I'd regret later, I pressed the red button on my phone.
Jake
All of us (except Renee) walked into the hospital, but split up as soon as we entered the lobby. Scarlet, Emma, Jeremy and I walked to room 3C. Brooke, Skylar and Jimmy walked to 4D. Jeremy, Scarlet, Emma and I walked into the room, only to find an empty bed. Emma knocked on the bathroom door, but there was no sign of Auriana there either. We looked at each other with a slight panic in our eyes. I decided to just ask the man at the front desk.
"I'm looking for Auriana Williams." The receptionist looked her up in the system.
"Oh, she's with Nikki Simon, Auriana should be back in her room in five minutes I think."
"Thank you," I said, relieved. So nothing serious had happened during the night. I walked back to the room and informed the others.
"Oh Scarlet, there's one more thing you need to know," Emma warned, "Auriana lost her memory, and Jake is the only one she remembers a little bit." Auriana walked into the room with Sister Emilia. She climbed onto the bed and pulled the covers over her.
Auriana
Suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my head, my hand grabbed my forehead as I started to feel dizzy. Images played before my eyes: "Okay, has no one, besides me, noticed that Scarlet has been really quiet all day?" Emma asked. She couldn't help it, she was worried. It was clear from the look on Emma's face. It wasn't like Scarlet to be so quiet, she normally couldn't keep her mouth shut for more than five minutes. We were all sitting in the auditorium, eating lunch.
"Now that you mention it," Brooke said, glancing in Scarlet's direction. She was standing in the cafeteria line to get a snack. She didn't seem very happy which was very unlike her.
"Something is seriously wrong," Nikki thought. Scarlet walked over to our table with a sausage roll in her hand and sat down with a sigh.
"Is something wrong?" Renee asked. She had always been very direct and impatient, so it was no surprise when she just blurted out the question.
"Nothing," Scarlet said as she looked down. We looked at each other, now we knew for sure that was wrong with our friend. We had known her long enough to know that she looked down when she lied.
"Scarlet?" Nikki said with a worried tone in her voice. She seemed like she was having an debate with herself about something, like she wasn´t sure she could tell us.
"Okay…my dad got a new job offer."
"Isn't that a good thing?" Skylar asked. Scarlet shook her head, tears visible in her eyes.
"In Whittersville," she whispered almost inaudibly.
The pain slowly subsided and I looked up at my friends who were looking at me with worried eyes. My eyes widened as I realized what was happening.
"What's wrong?" Jake asked worriedly. He sat down next to me on the bed while Emilia checked to make sure everything was okay.
"Scarlet," I whispered.
"What?" he asked. I couldn't hold back the smile that spread across my face any longer.
"I remember you." Scarlet, Jake, and Emma looked at each other.
"You remember us?" Emma asked relieved. I nodded enthusiastically.
