TERMINOLOGY
*this will be updated regularly
CELESTAL BODY - refers to any naturally occurring object in space. This can be a planet, an asteroid, galaxy, etc.
RPM (rotations per minute) - How many full rotations an object does in a minute.
Ex. Earth rotates at 0.000694 RPM.
INERTA - The state of motion in which an object remains in a straight line and is in constant motion. OR when an object remains in a state of rest. The Earth is spinning constantly, but no one notices/feels it. The reason being is because everything is moving together simultaneously, creating inertia.
EX. If you have ever spun around in a circle and held your hand out in front of you while holding onto something, you'll notice it looks like you are staying still while everything else is moving. Because you are holding the object and moving with it, it looks as if it is not moving—however in reality, you are the one moving.
GRAVITATIONAL PULL - Gravity is a force that creates attraction between two objects, pulling them towards each other. The larger something is, the more mass (amount of space inside an object) it has. The more mass something has, the more gravity it will have. The reason we are able to stand on Earth even though it's round (I'm looking at you flat-earthers) is because the Earth's gravity keeps us on.
Ex. The Moon orbits the Earth. The reason for this is because the Earth's gravity is larger than the moon's, so it is pulled in.
EXPLANATIONS OF CONCEPTS
*These will be used in the story later on—not necessarily helpful now but it will be later
EINSTEIN'S THEORY OF RELATIVITY (General relativity) - In essence, this is the idea that time can pass differently for two individuals placed in two different places.
EX. One minute on Earth might be two hours to someone near a black hole, meaning that time is relative (depends on the observers conditions)
Continued (a little more complex) - Within space, there is something called the fabric of spacetime. This is a model that combines the three dimensions—length, width, and height—-with the fourth dimension, time, and shows how gravity affects an individual's perception of time. When there are objects that have more mass (such as planets or black holes), they will have more gravity. The fabric of spacetime is warped by objects that have lots of gravity, meaning that one can perceive time to be longer when space time is warped.
So, someone near a black hole would experience more time because of the black hole's extreme gravity—while someone on Earth would experience one minute, because Earth's gravity is smaller than a black hole's.
EARTH'S ROTATION STOPPING - The Earth is in a constant state of inertia (look above) and is constantly moving. If something large enough—like another planet—crashes into the Earth, it will stop its state of inertia. Everything, including the air, will continue spinning while the earth has stopped spinning.
However, stopping Earth's rotation can be a gradual process as well. The Moon is in Earth's orbit and the two celestial bodies have their gravity pulling at each other. The Moon pulls on Earth, gradually making it turn slower every year (Making the days longer). Not to worry though, every century the day only increases by about 1.7 milliseconds. The gradual process of the decrease in the Earth's rotation is not at all dangerous. However, if an object larger than the moon came to orbit the Earth, perhaps the change would occur faster.
