Chapter 7: The Shadow Protocol

The server room was a cathedral of glass, steel, and humming processors, its core pulsing with eerie blue light. Mira and Lira scanned the labyrinth of servers, the Shadow Protocol's mainframe looming at the center like a digital heart. The air was thick with tension and the low thrum of data streaming through miles of fiber-optic cable.

Lira hurried to the main console, her hands flying across the keyboard. "This is it—the Shadow Protocol," she whispered, awe and dread mingling in her voice. Lines of code scrolled across the screens, encrypted and shifting, as if alive. "It's rewriting identities in real time. If we don't stop it now, the Veil will erase anyone they choose—memories, records, everything."

Mira kept watch, her thoughts racing with memories of her father and the countless victims of the Veil's power. "Can you shut it down?" she asked, her voice trembling but resolute.

Lira's brow furrowed. "I can try, but Veylan's built in failsafes. If I'm too slow, the system will wipe itself—and us with it."

Suddenly, the intercom crackled. Director Veylan's voice filled the room, calm and cold. "You're persistent, but misguided. Order requires sacrifice. Step away, and you'll live. Interfere, and you'll become shadows yourselves."

Ignoring the threat, Lira dove deeper into the code, bypassing firewalls and disabling security layers. Mira relayed instructions, reading out numbers and patterns as Lira called for them. The room shook as explosions echoed in the corridors outside—Draven was still holding off the Veil's operatives, buying them precious seconds.

A countdown appeared on the main screen: Protocol Activation: 05:00… 04:59…

Lira's hands shook as she typed. "He's activating it remotely. I need to sever the uplink and corrupt the core files, or it'll go live."

Mira steadied her. "You can do this. We're not alone."

As the timer ticked down, Lira executed a final sequence. Sparks flew from the console as the system fought back, but with a triumphant cry, she hit "Enter." The screens flickered, the countdown froze, and the Shadow Protocol's code began to unravel.

The lights dimmed. Silence fell. Mira and Lira exchanged a look—relief, disbelief, and the knowledge that the fight wasn't over.

Behind them, the sealed door hissed open. Draven stumbled in, battered but alive. "Did you do it?" he gasped.

Lira nodded. "The Protocol's down. But Veylan's still out there."

As alarms blared anew and the building's lockdown sequence began, the trio prepared for their final confrontation—knowing that the fate of Novaris, and their own redemption, hung in the balance.
