In the evening, after I picked up my son from school and returned home,

I saw Zhou Zian standing at my doorstep with a brand new backpack.

The tag from an international store was still on the backpack, clearly it cost quite a bit of money.

"Lele, your uncle bought you an imported backpack as a reward for getting full marks in your exams. Check if you like it!"

My son glanced at me, then shook his head to refuse Zhou Zian.

"Thank you, Uncle, but I already have an old backpack that my mom sewed for me."

Zhou Zian's gentle smile shattered inch by inch, his gaze revealing panic and unease.

I signaled my son to go to his room first, blocking in front of him:

"It's not polite to keep taking your uncle's generosity, there's no need to bring gifts anymore."

He seemed a bit guilty and anxious: "Sister-in-law, as your uncle, taking care of you is my duty, no need to be polite with me."

I just let out a cold laugh.

He frowned, looking at me uncomfortably: "I am, after all, your uncle. Do you really need to have this attitude?"

I stared straight at him, as if trying to see through him, wondering how he had the face to say such words: "As you said, you are just my uncle, not my husband. What makes you qualified to dictate my attitude towards you?"

The successive abnormalities in me and Lele finally made Zhou Zian uneasy. He tried to grasp my hand excitedly, asking why my attitude had changed overnight.

But I evaded him, telling him I was just his sister-in-law and that he should mind his boundaries, then went inside and closed the door.

Zhou Zian, standing at the door, was utterly speechless.

These past three years, even though he took over his brother's role, life remained unchanged, just like when he was Zhou Zian, still caring for me and my son, getting along intimately.

But now, hearing my warning, he realized we were no longer in a do-whatever-we-want relationship.

A distance must be maintained.

That night, Zhou Zian rushed out, buying three cans of malted milk, using up all his saved money, planning to give these gifts to me and Lele the next day, and apologize sincerely.

He was determined to mend the relationship with me and my son.

But he didn't know, tonight was the last night my son and I would stay with the Zhou family.
