The next day.
Just after I got up, Ji Rubai, pale as a ghost, handed me a report of his deteriorating condition.
"The doctor told me that my condition has reached the final stage and requires a large sum for treatment."
"I found a new job for you, with a very high compensation."
He said this with a flustered look in his eyes, even afraid to meet my gaze.
After a moment, as if making up his mind, he added.
"The doctor promised me, this is the last treatment, and after this chemotherapy ends, I will be completely cured."
I fixed my gaze on Ji Rubai.
His lie was too clumsy.
Clearly, we both know this is a journey from which there is no return.
Why bother telling such a story to deceive me?
I nodded in agreement.
Seeing my nearly indifferent attitude.
He was slightly dazed.
He lovingly caressed my cheek, and looking at my nearly battered body, a trace of guilt inevitably flowed through his eyes.
"After this is over, we'll get married, buy a villa by the sea, and keep a dog, living our own life."
As he spoke to the end, he seemed to imagine the beautiful life ahead.
His face was full of an anticipatory smile.
