The clouds drifted lazily over the Eastern Wastes, but deep within the mountains, under the layers of spiritual mist and silent peaks, tension was rising. Though the sun still shone and birds still called across the valleys, something had begun to shift. In the halls of Silent Ash Sect, cultivators walked with urgency, instructors whispered to one another, and protective arrays were being reinforced without public announcement.
Kai sat alone in the inner training chamber, his breathing slow and even. His golden aura had calmed into a soft shimmer, wrapping around his body like a living flame. He was shirtless, sweat clinging to his skin as steam rose from his shoulders. The small golden marks on his skin had multiplied, tracing along his ribs and collarbones like living tattoos. They pulsed with every heartbeat.
Today, he had reached Level 2 of Body Foundation.
He could feel it in every breath, every movement.
His body was lighter.
His senses were sharper.
And the energy in his dantian spun faster, steadier.
It was like standing at the edge of a great sea—and for the first time, he could wade into the water without drowning.
The door slid open, and Elder Tanin stepped into the room. His eyes scanned Kai from head to toe, his gaze settling on the glowing lines that traced the boy's upper chest.
"They've grown again," the elder said. "You'll need a special technique to contain the expansion soon."
Kai opened his eyes and nodded. "I can feel it. The energy keeps increasing. It's not just flowing into me—it's storing somewhere inside."
Tanin stepped closer and sat down across from him.
"What you're experiencing is something only a few cultivators have ever survived," he said. "Your body is evolving with every level. But if you don't pace it, you'll burn from the inside."
Kai clenched his fists. "Then I'll get stronger—faster. I'll master it before it masters me."
Tanin smiled faintly. "Good. Because you'll be tested sooner than you think."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "What do you mean?"
Tanin stood. "The sect has received word. There's been a disturbance in the southern forests. A beast of Saint-level bloodline has been sighted—injured, wild, and unstable."
Kai stood as well, the gold in his eyes flashing with interest.
"You want me to fight it?"
Tanin shook his head. "No. Not yet. But you'll come with the team. You'll observe. Feel its presence. Learn how real battle works."
Kai nodded, his hands already itching for action.
---
By dawn the next day, a group of eight disciples and three instructors had gathered at the main gate of Silent Ash Sect. They wore dark robes stitched with fire symbols, and each carried a weapon across their back or at their side.
Kai joined them last, his training robes tight around his arms. He carried no weapon yet—his techniques were unarmed.
The group's leader, Instructor Beilan, a stern man in the Spiritual General stage, gave Kai a long look.
"You've made progress quickly," he said, his voice gruff. "But talent alone isn't enough out there. Follow orders. Stay alive."
Kai bowed. "Understood."
The group moved out, running swiftly through the mountain paths. They moved like shadows between the cliffs, their feet barely touching the ground. Spiritual energy wrapped around their bodies, softening the impact of each step, keeping their presence low.
Kai followed close behind, amazed at how natural it felt now to keep up. Just a few days ago, running at this speed would've left him breathless. Now, he felt like he was gliding.
As they entered the southern forests, the trees grew taller, thicker, and the light dimmed. Mist clung to the roots and moss-covered rocks. Birds stopped singing. The wind carried an unnatural chill.
Beilan raised a hand.
"Stop here," he whispered. "It's near."
The group came to a silent halt. Kai focused his senses, drawing in the energy around him. He could feel it—a pulse. Slow. Deep. Each beat of it pushed against the natural flow of the world like a tide.
It was the presence of a beast cultivator.
Instructor Beilan pointed toward a clearing ahead. "Spread out. Two-man teams. Watch the treetops."
Kai was paired with Leina, a senior disciple with quick eyes and a sharp tongue. She carried a pair of thin daggers strapped to her thighs.
"Stick close," she said. "And don't freeze when you see it. These creatures can smell fear."
Kai nodded and followed her through the underbrush.
They crouched behind a fallen log, staring into the clearing beyond.
There it was.
A massive creature, twice the height of a man, hunched and breathing heavily. Its skin was covered in thick red scales, and a broken antler jutted from one side of its head. Blood dripped from a gash across its ribs, and its claws dug deep into the earth.
Its eyes glowed with faint violet light—unstable. Half-mad.
Kai leaned closer.
"What is that?" he whispered.
Leina replied, her voice tight. "A Scarlet Ironhide Beast. Normally docile… but when wounded, their spiritual cores leak. That kind of energy attracts other beasts… and can cause mutations."
Suddenly, the creature's head snapped up.
It turned.
And stared directly at them.
"Move!" Leina shouted, yanking Kai backward just as a massive claw tore through the log like paper.
The beast roared, a wave of heat blasting outward as it stepped forward.
From the trees, the other instructors leaped into action.
Instructor Beilan appeared above the beast, slamming his palms together.
"Mountain Press Technique!"
Spiritual energy gathered around his hands, forming a pair of enormous ghostly palms in the air. They came down with force, smashing into the beast's shoulders and driving it into the dirt.
But it didn't stay down.
It roared again, spiritual energy pouring from the wound on its side like smoke. The surrounding plants withered, and the air shimmered from pressure.
The beast leapt into the air, claws glowing with crimson light.
"Iron Fang Rend!" Beilan shouted, raising a barrier around himself.
The claw struck the shield with a deafening boom, sending cracks through the air like shattering glass.
Kai watched from behind the trees, fists clenched.
"I can't just stand here…"
Leina grabbed his arm. "You're not ready!"
But Kai pulled away. "Then I'll learn now."
He stepped forward, energy gathering around him.
He dropped into a low stance, remembering the Heaven-Touched Flow technique.
His hand swept through the air, forming a spiral of golden mist.
The beast turned, sensing the attack—but too late.
"Flowing Blade, First Form!" Kai shouted.
The spiral shot forward like a coiled wave, slicing across the beast's flank.
It howled in pain, stumbling sideways.
Beilan glanced back, surprised.
"That technique…"
Kai stood, panting, as the energy settled around him.
The beast snarled, eyes locked on the boy.
It charged.
The ground shook beneath the beast's charge. Leaves exploded upward. Dirt and stone were crushed under its massive limbs as it barreled toward Kai, its jaws wide open and leaking foul breath.
Kai's muscles screamed in warning.
He had only just stepped into Level 2 of Body Foundation. He had never faced a beast like this—its raw power was on a level far above his own. The energy it radiated was thick and suffocating, making it hard to breathe.
But he didn't flinch.
He stepped forward instead of back, gathering energy again into his limbs. The golden mist from his core raced through his meridians, faster this time, drawn by instinct and desperation.
"Heaven-Touched Flow, Second Form… Crushing Tide!"
His foot slammed into the ground, and his palm thrust upward from his waist in a spiraling motion. The air in front of him shimmered, twisting into a spinning wave of pressure.
The moment the beast reached striking distance, the wave erupted.
Boom!
A cone of condensed energy blasted forward, slamming into the creature's chest with a deafening roar. The beast howled as it was hurled backward, smashing into a tree and snapping the massive trunk in half.
Kai fell to one knee, gasping. His vision swam from the exertion. The golden mist around his body flickered dangerously—he had forced the technique beyond his current level.
Leina rushed to his side, dragging him behind a thick tree.
"What the hell were you thinking?!" she shouted, pulling out a pill and forcing it into his mouth. "That technique drained half your core!"
Kai coughed but managed a weak grin. "But it worked…"
Leina didn't answer. Her eyes were already back on the battlefield.
The beast stood again—bloodied, limping, but not dead. Its hide smoked from the impact, and rage now filled its eyes. But something else had changed too.
The leaking energy from its wounds had spread farther into the environment. The very trees near it had turned black. The grass had died.
And the beast's aura—it was twisting.
Instructor Beilan noticed it immediately.
"No… it's absorbing its own corrupted energy. It's mutating!"
He dropped down beside the other instructors. "We can't let it finish the transformation!"
One of the elders nodded. "We'll restrain it. Finish it off before it breaks through!"
The three instructors formed a triangle around the beast. With a stomp, each slammed their palms into the ground.
"Threefold Locking Array!" they shouted in unison.
Lines of silver and red energy shot from their positions, creating a triangular seal around the beast. Symbols burned into the ground, chaining the creature in place. It roared, trying to move—but invisible walls pressed in from all sides.
"Now!" Beilan roared.
He raised his arms, and energy formed above him—shaping into a massive spear of light.
"Piercing Dawn Technique!"
The spear launched downward with a shriek of compressed air, slamming into the beast's chest with incredible force.
The seal cracked as the impact landed. A huge explosion of dust and spiritual mist filled the clearing.
Everyone shielded their eyes.
When the smoke cleared, the beast lay on the ground, unmoving.
Its body twitched once. Then went still.
Kai let out the breath he'd been holding. His entire body was trembling from exhaustion, but he didn't look away. His gaze stayed locked on the creature, even as blood seeped into the dirt around it.
He had seen it—just before the final blow landed.
A flicker of awareness in the beast's eyes. Pain. Fear. And… clarity?
It was only for a moment, but it had been there.
"They're sentient," Kai whispered. "Even in rage, they feel."
Leina heard him but said nothing. She just put a hand on his shoulder.
"You did well."
---
Later that night, the team returned to Silent Ash Sect. The elders carried the beast's core—a dark red crystal still pulsing faintly with spiritual power.
It would be studied, purified, and perhaps even used in forging or alchemy.
But the experience had left its mark on everyone.
Especially Kai.
He sat alone on the rooftop of his quarters, staring at the stars. His body ached, but his core had grown. He could feel the spiritual mist moving toward him now even when he wasn't trying.
He had taken another step.
Level 3 was close.
Behind him, Elder Tanin appeared, carrying two tea cups.
"You're not sleeping?"
Kai shook his head. "I can't. Not after today."
Tanin handed him a cup and sat beside him.
"You showed courage," the elder said. "But you also showed recklessness."
"I know."
Tanin looked out toward the mountains. "You'll face many more like that beast. Some stronger. Some smarter. Some evil. What matters is not just your strength—but your understanding."
Kai sipped his tea. "It looked… aware. At the end."
Tanin nodded slowly. "Some beasts reach sentience when they cultivate long enough. They're not mindless. That one was still on the edge, but you felt it."
"Are they enemies?"
Tanin took a deep breath. "Some. But not all. The world is more complicated than that. You'll learn. In time."
They sat in silence for a while.
Then Tanin stood. "Get some rest. You have another lesson tomorrow."
Kai nodded and remained where he was as the elder left.
He looked up at the stars, remembering the golden-robed warrior from his vision.
He whispered to himself:
"I'll get there. No matter how far I have to climb."
Far above him, one of the stars pulsed faintly.
And in deep space, the cloaked fleet of the Hidden Flame Sect finally moved.
The man who led them—a human, exiled from Earth over a thousand years ago—watched Earth through a crystal screen.
"They've begun to rise again," he said. "How interesting."
His eyes glowed with red fire.
"Let's see how strong the next generation truly is."
