Chapter 48 — A Kingdom Away

---

**

The Eastern Palace was bathed in warm lantern light, corridors alive with the scent of sandalwood and the soft rustle of silk robes.

Shèng Lín (Prince) was led to his guest chamber, spacious and elegant, the drapes a familiar deep red, the air carrying memories of his years serving this place.

He stood quietly, eyes scanning the room before closing them, breathing in.

> "I'm not the same Shèng Lín anymore."

---

That evening, Lù Xiǎng himself arrived, dismissing the attendants with a wave of his hand.

> "Shèng Lín," he said softly, stepping closer. "Do you remember when we used to sit by the window and watch the lanterns together on nights like this?"

Shèng Lín (Prince) inclined his head, polite but distant.

> "I remember."

Lù Xiǎng's smile grew hopeful. "Then let's do that again. For old times' sake."

---

They moved to the balcony, Lù Xiǎng carefully setting a warm pot of tea between them.

> "It's your favorite," he said, pouring it himself.

Shèng Lín (Prince) took the cup, smelled it, and set it back down.

> "Thank you," he said, but didn't drink.

Lù Xiǎng's smile twitched.

---

Trying to break the silence, Lù Xiǎng moved closer.

> "You're quieter than before," he said, voice gentle. "I missed this side of you."

> "It's not the same as before," Shèng Lín (Prince) replied, eyes still on the moon outside.

> "Then let's make it the same," Lù Xiǎng tried, his hand reaching to brush a strand of hair from Shèng Lín (Prince)'s face.

Shèng Lín (Prince) shifted away ever so slightly, letting Lù Xiǎng's hand fall.

---

There was a long pause.

> "Are you truly so cold to me now?" Lù Xiǎng asked, unable to keep the hurt out of his voice.

> "I am only fulfilling my duty here, Your Highness," Shèng Lín (Prince) answered softly.

> "And if I ask you to stay forever?"

Shèng Lín (Prince) looked at him, expression unreadable.

> "That is not something you can order, Your Highness."

---

Lù Xiǎng let out a frustrated breath, rubbing his temple.

> "I've waited years, Shèng Lín. I thought once you were here, you would remember what we shared."

Shèng Lín (Prince) met his gaze, calm but firm.

> "I remember everything. That is why I will not give you false hope."

Lù Xiǎng's eyes widened, pain flickering before he turned away, laughing softly, though it sounded hollow.

> "You've changed, Shèng Lín."

> "I have," Shèng Lín (Prince) agreed.

---

That night, Lù Xiǎng could not sleep, pacing his chambers, clutching the tea cup Shèng Lín (Prince) had barely touched.

Meanwhile, in his own room, Shèng Lín (Prince) sat on the bed, staring at the moon, touching the ring on his finger, a small smile softening his eyes.

> shèng lín," he whispered.
