A few days later, my father, the Alpha, took time out of his busy schedule to find me at the penthouse. Ryker was out, leaving us to talk alone.
He treated me to dinner at a private room in a restaurant, where he suddenly announced, "In a month, it will be the Mating Moon. I'm planning to host a grand mating ceremony for you and Ken, to introduce my future son-in-law to all our allied packs."
I was about to stop my father, to tell him that Ken would never agree to mate with me, that he and Elise were the real couple.
But to my utter surprise, Ken, who had been summoned to the dinner as well, readily agreed, "I'll leave everything to your arrangements, Alpha."
I stared at Ken in shock, not understanding what game he was playing. His scent was devoid of any emotion, a cold, blank slate.
After dinner, I pulled Ken aside to confront him: "You're inseparable from Elise at school, everyone knows you're a couple. Now you're agreeing to a mating ceremony with me? How can you do this to Elise?"
Ken lowered his eyes to the ground, his eyelashes casting long shadows on his face: "I just want to give her a better life, that's why I'm choosing to mate with you." His voice was flat, devoid of the passion he showed Elise.
"I don't want to end up like my father, dying for someone else’s legacy. I want to climb the pack hierarchy, and becoming your mate is the fastest path to power."
"Your father needs a mate for you who is easy to control, and I happen to be the perfect candidate."
"All these years, he has provided for me, but he has never let me near the pack’s real business, its true power." My father was even more calculating in pushing me toward the boxing scholarship. It was less about nurturing me and more about limiting my potential."
"You would study business and take over the pack, while I'd be relegated to a muscle-bound simpleton, a mere enforcer. Our future pups would undoubtedly carry your name, not mine."
"But I can accept all that. Isn't a high-society mating just a business transaction? Once I become Alpha through this bond, we can each go our own way."
I was stunned by Ken's words. I had no idea he harbored such dark, twisted thoughts.
My father kept him away from the business because he showed zero interest, and the boxing scholarship was his only shot at a top school due to his lackluster grades.
My pack had paved the way for him, yet he saw it as deliberate suppression. Any lingering guilt I once felt for him, any pull of our destined bond, vanished in an instant, replaced by a cold, hard resolve:
"Forget about this mating. I will explain everything to my father. You have such a twisted way of thinking. I will not mate with someone who views our sacred bond as a mere transaction."
I believe Ken’s father, watching over him from the spirit realm, wouldn’t want to see his son living with such sordid thoughts. He would surely want Ken to be an honorable wolf, full of light, and to find a true mate that brings him happiness.
At that moment, I resolved to sever all ties with Ken and stop being a resource for him and Elise. I would tell my father everything and ask him to cancel the mating ceremony.
