Chapter 68 - Sparks, Speculation, and a Shared Meal
"That's wonderful news, Hazel," Damien's voice was warm through the phone. "You deserve this closure."
Standing by my car outside the cemetery, I felt lighter than I had in years. "Thank you. I..." I paused, gathering my courage. "Actually, I was wondering if you'd like to have lunch today? As a thank you for everything you've done."
The silence that followed made my heart race. Had I been too forward?
"I'd be delighted," he finally answered, his deep voice sending a flutter through my chest. "What time works for you?"
We settled on meeting at noon, and after hanging up, I immediately called Victoria.
"I need a private room at Imperial Garden," I blurted as soon as she answered.
"Well, hello to you too," she laughed. "What's the occasion?"
I hesitated. "I invited Damien Sterling to lunch."
Her squeal nearly burst my eardrum. "Finally! The ice queen melts!"
