"Sterling, what have you done?"  I whispered, my voice trembling.  "He was just asking for help!"

My stepbrother's eyes, usually a deep emerald green, now glowed with predatory amber as he shifted partially back from his wolf form.  His breathing was heavy, primal.

"He was too close to you, Aurora.  His scent was all over you."  Sterling's voice was eerily calm as he wiped blood from his hands onto his dark jeans.  "No man approaches what's mine."

The silence was suffocating as I sat alone in our private cabin. Kaelen's last words still hung in the air: "There is no us right now!" Each syllable had cut deeper than any physical wound ever could.


I stared at the cabin door he'd disappeared through minutes ago. My emotions were a chaotic storm—hurt, confusion, anger. How could he be so cold after everything we'd shared? After making me believe I was his?


The jet hit a pocket of turbulence, making my stomach lurch. Fitting, considering my life felt exactly the same way.

"Screw this," I muttered, unbuckling my seatbelt and standing up.
