I sat in my car, hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. The folder of redacted medical records from Willow Creek Sanitarium lay on the passenger seat, mocking me with everything it didn't reveal. I needed answers—real ones, not these sanitized half-truths.

My phone buzzed with an incoming call. Kaelen's name flashed on the screen.

I let it ring, heart hammering in my chest. After our last encounter, the intensity in his eyes when he'd warned me to "be careful," I wasn't ready to speak to him. Not when I was actively digging into his past against his wishes.

The call went to voicemail. Seconds later, a text appeared:

"Where are you? Come home now."

Home. The word made something twist inside me. The Sterling estate had never felt like home—it was Kaelen's domain, his fortress where he controlled everything and everyone. Including me.
