Chapter 26

Chapter 26: A Father's Cruelty and a Jealous Kiss

"Leave him alone!" I shouted at Lucian, surprising even myself with the force of my voice.

Lucian stood over the boy whose wrist he'd just broken, his eyes wild with rage. He slowly turned toward me, his expression morphing from shock to anger.

"What did you just say to me?" he growled, taking a step in my direction.

I swallowed hard but stood my ground. "I said leave him alone. You've done enough."

Lucian's friends exchanged glances, clearly surprised by my outburst. The injured boy and his friends took the opportunity to scramble away, leaving me alone to face Lucian's wrath.

"So you're defending them now?" Lucian's voice was dangerously low. "They were about to drag you into a closet, and you're worried about their wellbeing?"

"Violence isn't the answer," I said, though my voice trembled. "You didn't have to break his wrist."

Lucian's face darkened. "I should have broken his neck for touching what's mine."
