Li Junsheng agreed readily, and held up two fingers to Chen Dazhu.
"Alright, just give me another two hundred."
Coincidentally, this was exactly the amount he had recently given to his second son, Li Guohua. However, it was clear that Li Junsheng was asking for a bit too much.
Upon hearing the price, Chen Zhiyuan exclaimed, "Two hundred?! Uncle Li, have you gone mad??"
"Who charges two hundred just to get a work certificate from the factory?! You're clearly trying to rip us off!"
Chen Dazhu did not stop Chen Zhiyuan because he too felt the price was outrageous. He had expected it to be just a few bucks, maybe ten at most, but Li Junsheng opened his mouth and asked for two hundred! He could barely maintain a polite smile.
"Old Li, two hundred is too much… The thousand yuan I've given you is my life savings; I really can't spare any more. Can we lower it a bit?"
Ma Yulian followed up, "Exactly! You've worked at the factory for so many years; doesn't that count for anything? Does getting a simple certificate really have to cost two hundred? Is it you who's robbing us or them?"
"You think it's too much? Then why don't you tell that to the factory folks? See if they'll issue the certificate for your two hundred." Li Junsheng leaned back in his chair, looking as if he might refuse any further discussion.
Chen Dazhu and Ma Yulian were seething with anger but couldn't believe the nerve he had. If the factory didn't require Li Junsheng personally to process the job transfer paperwork, Ma Yulian would have solved this herself ages ago!
In the living room, tension hung thick in the air as Chen Dazhu stared at Li Junsheng, unable to say a word, leaving them both in a standoff.
Li Junsheng closed his eyes, pretending to relax, humorously entertained by their predicament. With a thousand already paid, Chen Dazhu wouldn't back out now, so Li Junsheng confidently played his game, knowing he had the upper hand.
It was Chen Zhiyuan who, affronted by the demand for more money, retorted with a stern face, "No way, there's no bargaining over the two hundred, Uncle Li. Give us back my dad's thousand, or name a more reasonable price."
Chen Zhiyuan believed that Li Junsheng couldn't return the full thousand he'd already received and hoped he would cave and run the errand without additional payment.
"Are you serious? You don't want the job at the machinery factory?" Li Junsheng asked with a sly smile.
Hearing this, Chen Dazhu gave Chen Zhiyuan a sharp look. "This is all because you had to butt in!" He scolded before turning back to Li Junsheng. "Old Li, don't mind what Zhiyuan says. Just give me a moment to think about it."
And so, Chen Dazhu really did pause to consider whether to let it all go to waste or keep going.
They had spent days planning to secure this job for his son from Li Junsheng! Even knowing that Li Junsheng was clearly trying to extort them, Dazhu could not call him out. They had no choice but to go along.
Steeling himself with a deep breath, Chen Dazhu hesitated for only a second before making up his mind to hand over the money.
"Alright, two hundred it is!"
He started rummaging through his things, pulling out bills from the bag under his arm, pockets, even his socks, until he finally gathered the full amount.
"Here, Old Li, I'm giving you the full two hundred," said Chen Dazhu, handing Li Junsheng a bundle of cash, his expression sour.
Li Junsheng nodded, counting the money to confirm it was indeed two hundred. Pocketing the cash, he flashed a mocking smile at Chen Dazhu, quipping, "Well, that's more like it. If you weren't such a smooth operator, old Chen, you wouldn't be dressed so impressively!"
Chen Dazhu fancied himself a gentleman, but he never did anything gentlemanly.
In his past life, Chen Dazhu and Ma Yulian schemed against him, profiting at his expense, especially after he discovered their illicit affair. Chen Dazhu tormented him until he met his end.
This time, Li Junsheng was determined to turn the tables and beat Chen Dazhu at his own game.
Though irritated by Li Junsheng's mockery, Chen Dazhu swallowed his words, his mind fully consumed by the desire to secure the job at the mechanical factory for his son, no matter the cost.
"Old Li," Chen Dazhu urged, "no time to waste. Take the money and go get that paperwork."
Li Junsheng, pocketing the cash, said nonchalantly, "What's the rush? The factory's closed now. Let me at least have something to eat before going back there."
"How can you think of eating at a time like this?" Ma Yulian chastised, her annoyance evident in her fiercely furrowed brow.
Unfazed, Li Junsheng sauntered into the kitchen and whipped up a couple of egg pancakes for himself, casually ignoring the uncomfortable presence of Chen Dazhu and Ma Yulian. Their agitation only served to improve his mood.
Satiated and content, Li Junsheng wiped his mouth, finally ready to head to the factory.
Whether out of impatience or suspicion that Li Junsheng wasn't serious about helping, Chen Zhiyuan insisted on tagging along, claiming he wanted to familiarize himself with the factory.
"Sure, you can come along."
Relenting, Li Junsheng agreed to let Chen Zhiyuan join him. Once at the factory, Li Junsheng allowed Chen Zhiyuan to explore as he wanted, while he went to get the necessary paperwork sorted yet again.
Leaving the HR manager's office with the document in hand, he promptly handed it to Chen Zhiyuan.
"Here you go. Keep this safe," he advised.
Elated, Chen Zhiyuan immediately headed towards the HR manager, eager to finalize the job transfer for fear that Li Guojun would rush in and obstruct him.
With his thoughts now focused on the batch of copper scraps held by Section Chief Zhou, Li Junsheng made his way to the black market once his business at the factory was concluded. He had invested seven hundred fifty in buying all of Section Chief Zhou's scrap materials and needed to sell them quickly to recoup his costs.
After entering the black market, after paying the entrance fee, Li Junsheng stopped in front of a discreet stall, his voice low, "Hey there, you know Lao Dao?"
At this, the stall owner, a man in his thirties, looked up and gave Li Junsheng a thorough once-over. He wasn't the only one; the surrounding vendors also focused their attention on Li Junsheng, making him feel like the prey of a pack of wolves.
As he glanced around, he realized some rough-looking young men had already blocked his way out.
"The hell do you know? This has gone over your head, buddy! Let's teach you a lesson in how you conduct yourself in the black market…"
At a gesture from the stall owner, a lackey came forward and threw a sack over Li Junsheng's head.
Engulfed in darkness, Li Junsheng felt several hands lift him up and carry him away at a hurried pace.
After what seemed like forever, he was thrust onto the bed of a pickup truck. The stall owner's voice called out from nearby.
"Boss Dao, this guy is asking for you!"
