Unexpectedly, the game didn't even bother to hide its malice toward the survivors. Just after the arena battles ended, a beast siege defense war kicked off right away.
Thinking of the old, rusty iron bow and arrows she just got, Zheng Haoyun could at least stay calm. She rushed over to the crafting table and began producing 30 arrowheads using wood blocks and copper ingots.
It would take 10 minutes. During that time, Zheng Haoyun sprinted outside and immediately saw: over twenty snow wolves were surrounding and attacking her wooden fence.
Watching a wolf's claw swipe reduce the durability of the fence by 0.5 each time—it was obvious this wouldn't hold, especially with such a large number of wolves.
So, Zheng Haoyun immediately used her spirit-type power to confuse six of the snow wolves attacking her fence.
While they were stunned, she quickly swung her iron shovel from behind the fence. She didn't hold back at all—her shovel blurred from the speed, and she stabbed toward their heads with full force.
In the end, she managed to kill four of them, but she wasn't the least bit pleased. Because she knew: the death of their companions would only drive the remaining wolves into an even greater frenzy. After all, wolves were known for holding grudges.
By now, the arrows should be ready. Not daring to lose a second, Zheng Haoyun ran back into the snow hut, grabbed the finished arrows from her crafting table, and swapped the iron shovel for the bow.
At this moment, she silently thanked her master from her previous life—not only had he trained her in swordsmanship, but he'd also made sure she could handle other weapons skillfully. He refused to let her be a one-trick cultivator.
Then, Zheng Haoyun pulled the bow and loosed arrow after arrow in one fluid motion. Unfortunately, her physical strength was lacking—each arrow wasn't enough to kill a wolf outright. She usually had to follow up with a second shot.
Although it was tedious, Zheng Haoyun didn't dare slack off and continued shooting nonstop.
When she finally ran out of arrows, only one wounded wolf remained, lying in the snow and staring at her with pleading eyes.
Zheng Haoyun saw that desperation clearly, but she had no intention of letting it go. She raised the iron shovel again and struck it down hard, sending it off to reunite with its pack.
After all, they came together—might as well head to the afterlife together too.
As for the foolish idea of "releasing a tiger back to the mountain"—that was never in Zheng Haoyun's playbook. She understood all too well: survival was the instinct of every creature, and wolves were vengeful by nature. If she spared it, it would likely return with an entire pack to get revenge.
If she didn't have the ability to resist, those wolves certainly wouldn't show her mercy just because she looked pitiful.
After finishing off the last of them, she picked up all 21 wooden treasure chests they dropped.
She then used the shovel to scoop up the blood-stained snow and packed it into her previously emptied silver chest to temporarily store in her backpack.
She took the time to clean up because she didn't want the blood scent attracting more predators.
Still not done, Zheng Haoyun noticed her fence was down to just 10% durability, so she quickly repaired it.
By this point, her legs were shaking from exhaustion, and her palms were blistered from all the archery.
She collapsed onto her wooden bed. Thankfully, there was a layer of beast hide on it—otherwise, her rough landing would have hurt.
After resting for half an hour, she finally managed to get up. This battle made her realize how urgent it was to strengthen her body.
Otherwise, all her combat instincts would be wasted if her body couldn't keep up.
Once she'd recovered, Zheng Haoyun finally had the energy to check the regional and world chat channels.
She saw the survivor count in the regional panel dropping rapidly, which made her stomach tighten with unease.
Many messages were frozen on earlier pleas for help—cries from those who couldn't hold on. There were also farewells, people giving up hope, and others lashing out in despair.
For example, a player named "Chen's Poria in the Mortal World" had left a message in the world chat:
"I have a five-year-old child. Chen Lan, I hope you can be strong and live on. Please take good care of our child…"
The message cut off—likely because something tragic happened.
Others tried to gain sympathy to ask for help. A player named "I'm a Cutiepie" was sobbing in the regional chat:
"Is there any kind soul who can give me some ice bricks so I can survive this attack? I swear I'll repay your kindness tenfold later!"
And someone responded:
"Everyone gets ice bricks from opening chests. If you're not putting in effort and just here to beg, what's the point?"
While Zheng Haoyun browsed, a sudden system announcement was broadcast to everyone:
"Congratulations to the survivors who made it through this unexpected trial. Some have triumphed over the crisis, while others perished due to their own negligence. Now, rewards will be distributed based on your performance during this defensive event. The top ten players will receive bonus rewards!"
Zheng Haoyun quickly opened her personal panel to check her reward notice.
"Congratulations 'I Will Turn My Luck Around'—during this defense, you actively resisted and eliminated all invaders. However, your completion time was one minute slower than the top performer. Therefore, you are ranked second. You will receive a Bronze Chest as your base reward, plus a bonus Silver Chest."
The game once again made things hard for everyone—directly posting the top ten names in the world channel, blatantly stirring up hatred.
If other players encountered those who repeatedly made the leaderboards, they would surely go all out to kill them. After all, such abundant resources concentrated in a few individuals would only make the average players more desperate.
Not long after, a fireworks icon popped up on her panel. She clicked it to find out—the game's item shop had opened. The copper coins earned from battles could now finally be spent.
The most shocking part was—it even sold magical books! But the price was in the millions—completely out of reach.
Not wanting to tempt herself, Zheng Haoyun turned her attention to the plot of land she'd previously obtained—a reward from her Silver Chest, which she'd planned to use for planting fruit seeds. That plan had been derailed by the unexpected beast siege.
She had three fruit seeds and wanted to plant them all, but the game wouldn't allow it.
So she chose to plant her favorite—an apple seed. A notification popped up:
"Without fertilizer, growth time is 3 days. Each planting reduces land durability by 25%."
In other words, this plot could only be used four times.
Oh well. Zheng Haoyun wasn't going to stress over it.
Next, she turned to open her two reward chests.
As for that nonsense about waiting until her luck stat was higher before opening chests? That was long gone from her mind—after all, the thrill of opening loot boxes was irresistible.
