Tianlan Magic High School, Boys' Dormitory.
Mo Fan was sitting cross-legged on his bed, meditating. He had spent the entire day joining the City Demon Hunting Unit, so he was making up for the wasted time by cultivating at night.
Suddenly, his phone rang. Mo Fan opened his eyes and glanced at the screen—it was a call from Captain Xu Dahuang.
"Hello, Captain, what's going on?" Mo Fan asked after picking up.
"A Giant-Eyed Blood Rat was found near Mingwen Girls' Middle School. Mission time—move!" Xu Dahuang said urgently.
"Oh—on it!" Mo Fan replied, quickly getting up. He grabbed his long, gray cloak hoodie and smeared his face with a black wax pencil for disguise.
Pulling on the hood, Mo Fan dashed off toward Mingwen Girls' Middle School.
Please be safe, Xin Xia... I must eliminate this demon. I can't let her remain in such a dangerous place.
…
Back Kitchen of the Mingwen Girls' Middle School Cafeteria.
Jing Wuji was sitting to the side, drenched in sweat, resting. His shoulders had already been wrapped in bandages.
Don't misunderstand—the sweat was from the pain.
Not far from him lay the corpse of the Giant-Eyed Blood Rat. He also had his "fifty thousand yuan" with him. All that remained was to wait for the City Demon Hunting Unit to arrive and take over.
Lin Yuxin and Lin Yun'er stood across from Jing Wuji, whispering to each other while sneaking glances at him. Lin Yun'er would even blush now and then—who knows what they were saying?
The other four people who had been rescued were already fast asleep from exhaustion. Once people escape danger, all their accumulated fatigue tends to hit at once.
After about ten minutes, the City Demon Hunting Unit finally arrived.
There were six members in the unit.
Leading the group was a burly man with his head wrapped in bandages, followed by a round-faced man wearing a beret.
To the left was a long-haired man in a flowing shirt, giving off a carefree vibe.
In the middle stood a man with sharply defined, dark features whose face was hidden under a cap.
Trailing behind him was a delicate-looking girl with a slender build, the typical girl-next-door type.
Bringing up the rear was a tall and striking woman, though she had a rather aloof, unapproachable aura.
The burly man stepped forward and asked, "I'm Xu Dahuang, captain of the City Demon Hunting Unit. Who made the call to report the Giant-Eyed Blood Rat, and where was it sighted?"
"I did. The rat's lying right there," Jing Wuji said, pointing to the corpse behind the kitchen table.
Xu Dahuang looked where Jing Wuji pointed and immediately saw the bloodstained corpse of the Giant-Eyed Blood Rat.
He had assumed the strong smell of blood was coming from Jing Wuji's injuries—but it turned out to be from the rat's blood.
"You took it down by yourself?" Xu Dahuang asked in shock.
"Yeah. I'll sell the corpse to you guys—just give me the standard price," Jing Wuji replied casually. He wasn't about to drag such a huge body to the Hunter's Hall to make a sale. It'd be time-consuming and exhausting.
"Alright, the corpse is ours. We'll give you 80,000—cash or transfer?" Xu Dahuang asked, pleased with the deal. It was a bit of a hassle, but they could resell it for a 20,000 profit.
"Transfer it to my Hunter ID," Jing Wuji said, handing over his card.
As the two completed the transaction, the rest of the team whispered among themselves.
"Who is this guy? He's strong—took out a Giant-Eyed Blood Rat solo. Since when did Bo City have someone like this? Feishi, you know him?" the young man on the left asked.
"No idea either. Li Wenjie, maybe you should ask the captain later," replied Feishi.
"He looks pretty handsome, don't you think, Fan Mo?" the girl in the middle tried striking up a conversation with the newest team member.
"Uh… maybe ask Deputy Captain Caitang," the dark-skinned young man—Fan Mo—deflected the attention to the tall woman at the back.
"Xiao Ke, you're such a fangirl," Caitang said with a helpless expression.
…
After the negotiation, Jing Wuji successfully received the 80,000 yuan transfer.
At that moment, Xu Dahuang asked a few more questions.
Having just earned a substantial amount of money, Jing Wuji was in a good mood and patiently answered the captain of the City Demon Hunting Unit.
"And these people?" Xu Dahuang asked, pointing to the four sleeping individuals on the ground, as well as the sisters Lin Yuxin and Lin Yun'er.
"Oh, them? Those four I rescued from the Giant-Eyed Blood Rat's nest. And she came looking for her missing sister—already found her, though," Jing Wuji replied casually. He didn't mention that these people had been rescued from the hands of Black Church members. He wasn't comfortable revealing too much, because you can never be too careful—who knows if one of them might secretly be with the Black Church?
Xu Dahuang stood upright, then bowed solemnly to Jing Wuji.
"Thank you for rescuing Bo City citizens. As the City Demon Hunting Unit, we failed in our duty to protect the people of Bo City. We sincerely thank you for stepping in."
Hearing their captain's words, the other members of the unit also bowed in unison to express their gratitude.
"It's nothing, just did what I could," Jing Wuji waved it off, clearly not bothered. If they wanted to show their appreciation, some practical reward would've been better.
"You guys handle the rest. I'm heading out. If you have any more questions, ask those two." He pointed at Lin Yuxin and Lin Yun'er.
"Alright. I hope we meet again," Xu Dahuang said as he saw him off.
Qi, is it? I'll remember that name.
Xu Dahuang silently noted the name on Jing Wuji's hunter license, remembering this newly-emerged powerhouse in Bo City.
Jing Wuji strode off confidently. As he passed by the members of the City Demon Hunting Unit, he gave a glance at the man standing in the center. That guy gave him an oddly familiar feeling.
He hadn't thought much of it at first, but one look nearly gave him a shock.
Mo Fan?! When did that punk join the Demon Hunting Unit? And he's gotten so dark-skinned after just a few days—did someone ship him off to mine coal in Africa or something?!
Mo Fan had also recognized the person in the metal mask.
Isn't that Jing Wuji? What the heck—why is he here? And what's with that ultra-cringe metal mask?
Their eyes met, each seeing the other's astonishment. Then, with uncanny synchronicity, they both looked away—as if to say, We don't know each other.
Yep, confirmed it in his eyes—he's the kind of guy I'm too embarrassed to acknowledge.
Both Mo Fan and Jing Wuji thought the same thing.
That said, Mo Fan still noticed the bandages wrapped around Jing Wuji's shoulders.
Is he hurt? Gotta ask him about it later.
Jing Wuji walked off without another word, his figure gradually fading into the darkness, watched silently by everyone present.
After he left, Xu Dahuang and the others got busy, interviewing people and calling for someone to transport the rat's corpse.
The wounded were taken to the hospital via ambulance, arranged by Xiao Ke.
Xu Dahuang also contacted the higher-ups and worked to erase the public impact of the incident.
Even Mo Fan was assigned grunt work—while the man who caused all this chaos, Jing Wuji, had already gone back to the dorms and fallen fast asleep.
