Chapter 4
Cossette's POV
I was sitting in our room. He stood up to go, and I jumped to the door. I smiled awkwardly.
"You can sleep here. I will go to the guest room," I said, smiling again and closing the door behind me.
His face?
He was confused. But he didn't say a word.
That night, I didn't sleep.
What if he thought I discovered something and wanted to kill me now?
So I put a knife under my pillow and didn't even close my eyes for a second.
The moment the sun came out, I wore jeans and a simple white shirt and left the apartment.
Usually, the old Cossette would wake up this early to make him breakfast. But no—
The new me was going outside—exactly to Betha's house.
The only person that I still trust.
I rang her door.
She opened after a few minutes, still sleepy.
She said, yawning, "Yes? Who is it?"
When she saw me, she gasped.
"Cossette?! What are you doing here the first day after your marriage? And why are you coming this early? It must be 7 a.m. now. What happened?"
I entered and sat on the sofa.
"Sorry for waking you early, Betha, but…"
Betha sat next to me and said, "Okay. Wait—coffee first. And I need to wash my head. Or I can go and kill him if he did something to you."
Betha ran to her bathroom, came back to make coffee, then sat next to me.
She said, "I'm ready now. Speak."
Cossette: "He killed me."
Betha: "Yeah, I think the coffee hasn't hit my brain yet…"
Me (Cossette): "No, I'm talking really. He killed me."
Betha: "Did you consume something yesterday? Even at the wedding you were out of this world—I mean, the bouquet thing? I laughed so hard."
Cossette: "Betha, believe me. I'm not lying. Hear me out—Frost and Anika killed me."
Betha: "Anika? Your stepmother? Yeah, she could—that witch. But…" She paused and suddenly shouted,
"Cossette, don't make me act crazy. How did they kill you if you're just in front of me?!"
She touched my forehead to see if I had a fever.
Me: "Betha—I think I was reborn. Four months before my death."
Betha: "Yeah, well, I was reborn as an egyptian queen too one day, and i was enjoying a bowl of koshari ! . cossette You need to see a doctor. Let's go." She held my hand.
Me: "Anika is Frost's mistress."
Betha gasped and screamed,
"What?! That's gross. Ugh—I will vomit. She's your stepmother! Okay, she's young, but still—ugh, oh my God. How do you know this? My poor baby."
Me: "They killed me—I told you, Betha. In my apartment's parking. They kissed in front of me. Please, believe me."
I held her hand tighter.
"I'll prove to you that it was real, that I got reborn. I only have you to save me this time. After four months—they'll kill me. I don't have time, Betha. I need you."
I started to cry—for the first time since I got this second chance.
Betha looked at me, eyes softening. "Okay, okay. Stop. I'll help you in this crazy thing, no matter what. Even if I'm not fully convinced—maybe with time."
Me: "Yes—I'll prove it to you. It's the truth."
Betha: "I'll always be here." She hugged me tight.
Betha was my childhood best friend. We were born the same day, same hospital, same hour—and from that day, we never separated.
After Dad's death, she stayed with me more than Anika ever did.
Betha was my only ally in this revenge plan.
