"I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. You got hurt because of me."
I shook my head. "Don't say that."
And yet, a bitter feeling spread through my heart.
After all, if even my own husband chose to run away in a situation like that, who was I to blame?
Besides, our marriage certificate was invalid. He wasn't really my husband at all.
Marcus brought me some food.
"Sophia, try this."
"I'll take care of you until you're out of the hospital."
I was mostly silent.
But Marcus was patient, and he talked to me about all sorts of things.
He told me how blue the sky was that day, and how beautiful the clouds were as they drifted by.
He'd seen a car accident on his way over and had called for an ambulance.
He'd found a beautiful, heart-shaped leaf, and he brought it to me, saying I could press it between the pages of a book to use as a bookmark.
He'd also come across a cute stray cat.
He said that one day, when he was able, he would definitely adopt it.
