Sea Breeze and Second Chances

Elara's POV

The morning sun sparkled on the water as I stood at the pier, watching Jamie and Hector race down the boardwalk. Their laughter carried on the breeze, reminding me of simpler times.

"Slow down!" I called after them, adjusting my sunglasses. "The boat isn't going anywhere without us."

Yesterday had been chaos. Amelia called with a family emergency, begging me to take her sons for the day. I'd already promised the boys a ferry ride and picnic on the island, something they'd been looking forward to for weeks.

"We won't go far, Elara!" Jamie shouted back, his thirteen-year-old frame lanky and awkward as he ran.

Hector, two years younger and considerably more cautious, had already stopped to wait for me. "Are we really going on that big boat?" he asked, pointing to the ferry.

"That's the one," I confirmed, ruffling his hair.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. Beck's name flashed on the screen, sending an unexpected flutter through my chest.
