"I'm sorry, but I'll have to pass," I said to Damien, breaking our momentary connection. "I have work to prepare for tomorrow."
Surprise flickered in Damien's eyes before his expression smoothed back to neutral.
"Mom, please come with us!" Cora tugged at my hand, her lower lip pushed out in a pout.
I crouched down to her level. "I wish I could, sweetie. But Mom has an important meeting tomorrow that I need to get ready for."
Disappointment shadowed her face. "You always have to work."
The accusation stung because it wasn't usually true. I'd spent years putting my career second to be available for her. Only recently had the balance shifted.
"I'll make it up to you," I promised, brushing a strand of hair from her forehead.
Damien placed a hand on Cora's shoulder. "Your mother has responsibilities, just like I do. We should respect that."
His unexpected support surprised me. I stood up, nodding a silent thank you.
