A Strained School Day Alliance

Elara's POV

The Vance residence was uncharacteristically lively when I returned that evening. As I stepped through the door, I could hear animated voices coming from the sitting room.

"There she is!" Amelia exclaimed as I entered. Her eyes sparkled with curiosity. "So, how was your day on Beck Winters' yacht?"

Victor looked up from his newspaper, barely concealing his interest. "The boys wouldn't stop talking about it. They said Dr. Winters might take you all out again."

I set my purse down, surprised by the reception committee. "It was just a casual outing. The children had fun."

Clara Bellweather, who was sipping tea in her favorite armchair, fixed me with a knowing look. "Beck Winters is quite the catch, Elara. Handsome doctor, successful businessman, and clearly good with children."

"Grandma," I warned softly.

She raised her eyebrows innocently. "What? I'm simply making an observation about a man who took my granddaughter sailing today."
