The Bedroom of Erased Memories

Elara sighed as she helped Cora out of the bathtub. Their evening together had been wonderful, despite the circumstances of Cora's illness. The little girl's eyelids drooped as Elara wrapped her in a fluffy towel.

"Arms up," Elara instructed gently, holding out Cora's favorite unicorn pajamas.

Cora complied with a sleepy nod. "I'm glad you stayed, Mom."

"Me too, sweetheart." Elara's hands worked deftly, dressing her daughter. "Now, let me just grab my toiletries from the master bedroom, and then I'll read you a story."

"Can we read 'The Paper Bag Princess'?" Cora asked, her eyes brightening despite her fatigue.

"Of course." Elara planted a kiss on her forehead. "Wait here. I'll be right back."

She stepped into the hallway, her bare feet silent against the plush carpet. The door to the master bedroom stood slightly ajar, a sliver of soft light spilling into the corridor. She hadn't been inside for weeks, not since she'd moved out to her apartment downtown.
