"Please stop fidgeting," Beck told Cora as they stood in line for the roller coaster at Happy Valley amusement park.
Cora's small shoulders slumped. She kicked at the ground with her sneaker, clearly uninterested in the excitement surrounding them. Children's laughter and screams of delight filled the air, yet Cora remained withdrawn.
"I thought you loved roller coasters," Beck said, trying to catch her eye.
"I do," Cora mumbled, not looking up.
Beck sighed. When Damien had asked him to take Cora to Happy Valley because she didn't want to go out alone, he'd expected the usual energetic child. This sullen version of Cora was unfamiliar territory.
"Look at that one," he pointed to a massive looping coaster. "We can try that next if you're brave enough."
Cora merely shrugged, her eyes fixed on her phone. Beck noticed she was scrolling through her call history—specifically, her outgoing calls to Elara.
"Did you call your mom again?" he asked gently.
