The afternoon sun filtered through the restaurant windows, casting a warm glow across our table. Eliza's laughter rang out as she finished telling me about her daughter's latest school adventure.

"I swear, Catherine, I never thought parenthood would involve so many science fair disasters," she said, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes.

I smiled, taking a sip of my iced tea. "At least Ella's creative. Remember when Cora decided her project should be 'Why Cookies Taste Better Than Vegetables' and we had to redirect her entire approach the night before?"

"That's your daughter—practical even in her rebellion." Eliza checked her watch. "Jorge should be here soon. Are you sure you're okay with him joining us for the movie?"

I nodded. "Of course. He mentioned Ella's been dying to see this film. It'll be good for Cora to spend time with other children."
