Sitting on my bed, I stared at my phone screen, watching as Mom's picture flashed with each ring. I'd already tried calling her twice, and she still wasn't answering.

"She's probably just busy, sweetie," Dad said, sitting next to me. He'd stayed while I tried calling her again, his hand warm on my back.

I ended the call when it went to voicemail. "But what if Liam was right? What if she's with that other girl?"

Dad sighed. "Coco, I promise you, your mother wouldn't replace you with another child."

"But he said—"

"Liam was mistaken." Dad's voice was firm but gentle. "Do you want to try texting her instead?"

I nodded, quickly typing: *Mom, are you with another little girl? Please call me.*

As soon as I hit send, Dad gently took the phone from my hands. "How about we distract ourselves for a bit? I heard Mrs. Palmer made chocolate chip cookies."

"I'm not hungry," I mumbled, but my stomach growled loudly.
