I pressed the intercom button, trying to keep my voice steady despite my racing heart. "Dylan. What are you doing here?"
His voice came through the speaker, clear and professional. "I came to offer Clara a ride to the hospital. The doctors want to do a final check on Eleanor before discharge."
Of course. This wasn't about me or even Cora. It was about Eleanor.
"Give me a minute," I said, releasing the intercom button.
I hurried back to the kitchen where my mother was wiping syrup from Cora's face. "Mom, Dylan's here. He says the doctors want to do a final check on Eleanor before discharge. He's offering you a ride to the hospital."
My mother raised an eyebrow. "How thoughtful of him."
"Daddy's here?" Cora's face lit up. "Can I see him?"
"Finish your breakfast first, sweetie," I said, already heading to my room. "I need to change."
