Cora bounded into my living room, her backpack clutched tightly against her chest. Her cheeks were flushed with excitement, her eyes bright with the day's adventures.

"Mom! I went to the most amazing maze today!" she exclaimed, dropping her backpack on the floor and twirling around. "It was huge! With tall hedges that went up to the sky!"

I smiled, watching her animated gestures as she stretched her arms up to demonstrate the height. "That sounds wonderful, sweetheart. Who took you there?"

"Mr. Harper and Eliza!" She plopped down on the couch. "Eliza got lost three times, but I only got lost once."

My mother, who had been quietly sipping tea in the armchair, set her cup down with a deliberate clink. "Mr. Harper again? Where was your father today?"

I shot Mom a warning glance, but she ignored me.

"Dad had meetings," Cora replied casually, already digging through her backpack. "Look what I made!"
