Chapter 8

I failed.

During the men's 1,500-meter semifinals, I found myself placed in the same heat as Seonho. Admittedly, last night I’d had an unfounded sense of confidence and told myself, ‘What can’t I do?’ even though I was as nervous as someone attending a job interview.

I hadn’t had a good qualifying group either, and I’d used up what little energy I had to get through that.

It felt like a blessing that I had even made it this far in the first place. Still, I thought, since I was there, I might as well give it my all and try to place first or second to make it to the finals alongside Seonho.

And if that wasn’t possible, I’d at least try and help him advance alone. At the very least, I didn’t want to hinder him. That was my goal.

I stood in lane two, while Seonho stood in lane three. Over in lane one, the Canadian athlete I’d met yesterday was taking his position. He flashed me a smile and I returned the gesture.

‘Hello, retriever.’
