Chapter 33: Inheritance of War
The King fortune was bleeding.
Following the public release of the Legacy Project files, King Global's assets were placed under federal scrutiny. Yet not everything had been accounted for. A single holding company—small, quiet, and overlooked—was suddenly reactivated.
Its new power of attorney? Gideon Vale.
Xavier stared at the name.
"Who the hell is Gideon Vale?" Ella asked, leaning over the desk.
Xavier's jaw tightened. "He's a fixer. Old money. The kind of man you hire when you want something erased without leaving a trace. My father worked with him before I was born. I thought he disappeared after Anthony died."
Ella frowned. "So why is he back now?"
"Because we created a vacuum. And men like him feed on power that's up for grabs."
---
That evening, Ella received a package.
No return address.
Inside: a single silver cufflink, engraved with the King family crest—and a note.
> The crown may fall, but the wolves remember. — GV.
Xavier turned the cufflink over, then stared at the firelight dancing across its surface.
"He's declaring war."
---
The next morning, Camilla Hart called from D.C.
"Gideon's filed a petition to seize King Global's surviving trust. He claims rightful management under a clause your father buried in a third-party acquisition. If the court sides with him, he'll regain controlling interest."
Ella blinked. "Can they do that?"
Camilla sighed. "Not unless he proves you two are unfit custodians of the estate. Which is exactly what he's going to try."
---
Within 48 hours, the smear campaign began.
News leaks.
Whispers of fraud. Photos of Xavier during his years abroad—out of context. A twisted article framing Ella's marriage as an orchestrated power grab.
The headlines read:
KING HEIR'S BRIDE: TRUTH OR MANIPULATION?
XAVIER KING UNSTABLE, SOURCES SAY.
THE CARTER CONNECTION: SCANDAL OR STRATEGY?
Ella slammed her laptop shut. "This isn't journalism. This is sabotage."
"They're framing the narrative before the court can see the truth," Xavier growled.
Ella looked at him. "Then we fight it. Together."
---
They launched their own press briefing.
Ella stood before the world again, this time unwavering.
"I didn't choose to marry into power. I chose to uncover the truth. And if that threatens the legacy of men who thrived in darkness, then I'm proud to be their storm."
---
But Gideon was already two steps ahead.
A subpoena arrived.
Calling both Ella and Xavier to testify in court over the future of the King trust.
Xavier exhaled slowly. "This is the last game. If we win, we rebuild. If we lose, it's all gone."
Ella met his gaze. "Then we don't lose."
He smiled, bitter but brave. "We never really had a choice, did we?"
She touched his hand. "Maybe not. But we get to choose how we fight."
