The Matchmaking Charade

**KIAN**

I shouldn't be here.

The thought kept circling in my head as I stood in Roman's backyard, a lukewarm beer in my hand that I had no interest in drinking. The laughter and chatter around me grated on my nerves. Happy families and their perfect little gatherings were never my scene.

But Aurora was here. That was reason enough.

When Roman had invited me to this barbecue, I'd initially refused. Then he mentioned his stepdaughter would be attending, and something in his tone made me suspicious. I hadn't realized until I arrived that Aurora's mother was Roman's wife.

Now I understood why Aurora had been so secretive about us.

"Vance, surprised to see you socializing with the commoners." Julian Croft sidled up beside me, his designer polo shirt and pressed khakis screaming old money.

"Could say the same about you." I kept my eyes on Aurora across the yard. Her mother had her cornered, introducing her to a parade of men in button-up shirts and fake smiles.
