The Slap and the Summons

AURORA

"Isn't this sweet? Looks like someone finally got out of the friend zone!"

The emcee's voice boomed through the microphone, drawing every eye in the room toward Liam and me. My lips still burned from his forced kiss. The spotlight swung our way, blinding and hot against my face.

"Ladies and gentlemen, let's give it up for the other love story happening tonight!"

Applause erupted around us. Someone whistled. The heat of shame crawled up my neck as strangers clapped for a moment that made me feel violated.

"Come on, you two," the emcee continued. "Stand up and give us a proper show!"

Liam's hand slid possessively around my waist. "Just play along," he whispered, his breath hot against my ear. "Everyone's watching."

That was exactly the problem. Everyone was watching—including Kian, whose dark eyes burned into mine from across the room. His jaw was clenched, body rigid with barely contained fury.

Something snapped inside me.

"Let go of me," I hissed.
