Scars of Allegiance

"Not all scars are visible. And not all loyalty is eternal."

📍 Shadow Flame Stronghold – Medical Wing

The scent of blood and antiseptic lingered in the air.

Kael entered in silence.

For the first time since claiming the stronghold, he wasn't covered in shadow or wounds. Only fatigue. Deep, soul-worn fatigue.

Nara looked up from across the ward, tending to a teenage girl with mana burns crawling up her arms.

"You came," she said.

Kael scanned the room.

"Are there many injured?"

"Too many," she replied. "Some are getting sick just by being near instability zones. The air itself is changing."

He glanced at the unconscious girl.

"Is this… my fault?"

Nara paused before answering.

"No. But your presence draws things no one understands. And there's always a cost."

Kael turned to her. Her eyes were shadowed from lack of sleep, but steady. There was no fear—only weariness… and perhaps a trace of resentment.

"Do you still trust me?" he asked.

"I believe that you believe," she said, wiping her hands. "But belief and trust… they're not the same."

📍 District Six – Civilian Sector

Children played in a narrow alley between stone buildings, their laughter echoing against scorched walls. On one of those walls, a symbol had been painted: a black circle wrapped in flames—the emblem of the Shadow Flame.

Syl watched from a distance, bottle of cloudy water in hand, listening to the whispers:

— "He fought a demon alone."

— "He speaks with shadows."

— "They say he's not even human anymore…"

She scoffed.

"You people have no idea."

An old man approached, holding a tattered map.

"You're one of his, aren't you?"

Syl raised an eyebrow.

"'One of his' sounds cultish. I'm just a pragmatic woman surrounded by fools."

"No need to pretend," he said. "Everyone knows who's moving the pieces now. I just want to ask one thing."

"Go ahead," she muttered.

"What happens if… he falls?"

She went quiet.

Then answered, voice low:

"Then the world falls with him. Because there's no one left to hold it up."

📍 Outer Ruins – Training Grounds

Myrla stood quietly, observing new recruits swinging replica weapons and mana staves. They weren't soldiers. Just angry, frightened civilians trying to survive.

She made notes in her journal.

One of the younger trainees approached.

"Miss Myrla?"

"Yes?"

"Why do we follow someone like Kael? He doesn't talk to us. He doesn't show his face. He doesn't even know we exist."

Myrla gave a thin smile.

"Because when the gods fell silent… he answered."

The boy lowered his gaze. She gently touched his shoulder.

"It's good to ask questions. Especially about the people we admire. Just… pay attention to what he does, not what he says."

📍 City of Juren – Magistrate Hall

Inside the high tower of justice, faces hid behind enchanted masks, voices muffled beneath magical distortions.

The council listened. Recorded. Judged.

A new decree was signed into existence:

> "Any individual affiliated with the Shadow Flame Rebellion shall be labeled a Class-C threat.

All civic rights revoked.

Pursuit and neutralization authorized."

Far in the shadows of the chamber, a guild envoy waited with a cruel smirk.

The hunt would begin soon.

---

📍 Kael – Upper Tower, Shadow Flame Stronghold

He watched the city below. Lights flickered across Juren like fireflies in a dying forest.

But Kael saw through them all.

Nara joined him on the tower, now in civilian clothes, eyes softer.

"The city moves," she said.

"How?"

"Some worship you. Some fear you. Most… just want to live."

He didn't answer immediately.

"And you?"

She hesitated.

Then said:

"I want you to live."

This time, he turned to face her fully.

"…Thank you."

They stood there, saying nothing more for a long time. The silence wasn't awkward.

For once, it was peace.

📍 Unknown Underground Citadel

A long-forgotten chamber. A war table. Dust-covered scrolls in a language burned by time.

Three figures surrounded a floating map of Juren, light pulsing like a heartbeat.

A voice echoed from the stone itself:

> "Loyalty is a game men play.

But shadows… answer to different masters."

None of the figures replied.

All eyes locked on a glowing point on the map.

A name:

> Kael
