Chapter 31 – The Link of Silent Shadows

The wind blew gently over the heights of the Silent Soul Sect.

But the calm was only an illusion.

Since Shen Mu's return, the disciples had grown more cautious, the elders more silent, and even the spirit beasts at the foot of the mountain seemed to be holding their breath.

In the inner courtyard, Shen Mu sat cross-legged. In front of him, Nihila rested on a stone slab. The sword, black as the abyss, emitted no aura. Yet the air around it seemed… reversed. As if every fragment of the world was bending slowly toward the blade.

He closed his eyes.

In his mind, a light flickered on.

A whirlwind of visions surged.

A red desert.

Fallen pillars.

An empty throne.

And before it, a faceless figure, holding Nihila with both hands.

— Why am I alone… in every world?

The voice did not belong to him. Yet something deep within him resonated in unison.

When his eyes reopened, the sky had changed color.

A pale halo, barely visible, had formed around his body. Not a display of power… but a presence. An existence.

As if the universe itself remembered Shen Mu.

But it wasn't time yet.

He stood, and stored Nihila in his spatial ring. The sword vanished like a shadow swallowed by the night.

At that very moment, in a deep chamber of the sect, an old man opened an ancient scroll.

His hands were trembling.

"An inverted aura… The Silent Gaze… The bladeless reflection…"

He stepped back.

"These are just legends. Fragments found in ruins. Even the old Emperor Qianlong dared not speak of them…"

But the symbols on the parchment glowed faintly.

A forgotten name echoed in his mind:

The Eye of the Void…

He dropped to his knees.

But he didn't dare speak. He didn't even dare look toward the inner courtyard.

— If that young man is connected to those legends… then what are we doing in the same world as him?

Meanwhile, Shen Mu descended the stone steps toward the bamboo forest.

It was time to answer the Sect Master's summons. A meeting of the six elders was underway. And his name had been mentioned.

Along the way, several disciples stepped aside. Some bowed. Others lowered their gaze, as if afraid to meet his eyes.

But a clear voice rang out.

— "Senior Brother Shen!"

It was a young girl, dressed in a light blue robe. Her eyes were bright, full of innocence.

Shen Mu stopped.

She gave a timid smile.

— "I… I just wanted to say your return has eased many fears. Some thought you were…"

— "Dead," he finished.

She looked down, embarrassed.

But Shen Mu continued calmly:

— "Sometimes you have to die… to truly understand what it means to live."

Then he resumed walking, leaving behind a disciple red with shame… and emotion.

In the Main Hall, the elders were speaking in hushed voices.

— "His aura has changed."

— "He's been touched by something… beyond us."

— "Perhaps an ancient blessing? A forgotten inheritance?"

— "Or a pact…"

The Sect Master raised his hand.

— "Enough with the speculation. That young man is one of our own. As long as he grows under our roof, we must provide him with resources and support. If he continues to rise at this pace… he'll become a pillar of our sect. We have a duty to protect him."

When Shen Mu entered the hall, all voices fell silent.

He walked to the center without lowering his head.

The Sect Master smiled.

— "You've returned, Shen Mu. That is all that matters."

Shen Mu nodded.

But deep within his gaze, something still slept.

Something… that none of them truly understood yet.
